    2. Karen & Peter
    3. Good evening Listers, I was wondering if anyone had access to the Bombay newspapers for 1827. On the 16 Jan 1827 Henry Pyster was buried in Bombay India. I was wondering if there was anything in the papers around that time as I have a feeling he had a violent death and would like to find out. Many thanks Karen

    1. [INDIA] Researching ROY or ROWLAND EZEKIEL MINJOOT or MENJOU. Singapore/India/Pakistan.
    2. Geoffrey Williams
    3. Hello List, For some years, I have been trying to trace my late brother-in-law Roy Ezekiel Minjoot or Menjou, who I presume had his "roots" in Singapore and Malaysia. See note below. My history of him had been in post Independent India, when he married my sister Edna at Lahore Registry Office 14.4.1945. (Lahore is now in Pakistan) I was then 11 years of age. I know he was born 25/3/1910 where ???? and died in Karachi, Pakistan on 28.2.1975. I had only ever known him by the surname MENJOU.but I am given to believe that he changed it to MENJOU from MINJOOT. I have no details as to where and how the name change was made. The Singapore link. After much searching, I have found his name Roy Minjoot, in an article in The Strait Times, 21 July 1934. He is mentioned playing piano at an evenings entertainment at The Singapore Cricket Club along with Frank Braidwood, the international cowboy baritone, and the humorist Jock Carmichael, with Roy Minjoot at the piano. "Mr Roy Minjoot played selections of various modern songs, and also a composition of his own, which well deserved the applause it received." He was an accomplished pianist, and as young as I was I can remember him playing at The Savoy Hotel, Mussoorie. India. My brother in law, was to me a bit of a "mystery man". He had quite a marked American accent, but as far as I know carried a British Passport? Although not orthodox, he displayed Jewish religious signs, by wearing a kippah, yarmulke or kappel, skull cap, and shawl on a Friday. His middle Ezekiel name would be a Jewish name. Does anyone know where the name Minjoot could have its roots? Is this Jewish? If anybody has any more clues as to where I might find out more about ROY, I would be grateful. Trying to complete the family tree, and also give his children information concerning their father/grandfather. Kind regards, Geoff Williams Sheffield. U.K. These rather disjointed

    2. Ann Chidley
    3. I read on their website earlier this year that there might be an opportunity to report errors, however, we will have to wait and see what is available once the new site goes live.   I have found a huge number of errors in "my" records but so long as you know that they are there, you know that you have to be a bit creative in your search criteria.  Despite the errors, the beta records have knocked down several brick walls for which I am extremely grateful.  Remember that nothing is true until you have seen the record for yourself and the returns may contain the odd error.  It is just a shame that the prices for the films have gone up so much, it has certainly curtailed my ordering.   Ann Chidley   Skype me: ann.chidley

    3. Hi Karen I'm not researching this family but tried having a look on various sites, but nothing shown on FIBIS or B/L but on the LDS site at this https://www.familysearch.org/s/image/show#uri=http%3A//pilot.familysearch.org/records/waypoint/5483024&hash=Mrd8SMocDIIen2Q83tu%252B82PRagg%253D there are images of baptisms from 1801-1851 but you will evidently have to scroll through until you come across the name you want, that is if it does appear. I'm not too fussed at the new site and found it difficult to get to these but you may have better luck. I hope the site comes through okay. 1. [INDIA] Family Trees on the Internet
    2. Noel Clark
    3. I echo what others have said concerning family trees on the internet. My own experience is that they are likely to be both out-of-date and inaccurate, and in some cases laughable. I have seen trees containing ancestors who died as infants, simply because the originator looked only at baptisms and marriages, and not at burials! In my case, I innocently provided material to various cousins in the late 1990s. It was, of course, 'work in progress.' It was put on the internet without my knowledge and without my permission. I have since corrected various mistakes in that preliminary material. (and greatly enhanced it). However, the mistakes in the 'work in progress' remain on the internet, and are perpetuated by subsequent users. In all the cases that I have come across, the web-sites concerned permit only the submitter of the family tree to change it or remove it altogether. I was once able to have my own name removed, but that is the only success I can recall. In at least one case, the submitter of the material has since died, so according to the policy of the web-site concerned, the incorrect material can never be removed. My other word of warning is that it is dangerous to send anyone a file of your family tree information unless you are assured of their credentials. Such files almost always contain details of people who are of no interest to the other party, but once you send these details you have no control over their subsequent distribution. Noel

    1. [INDIA] SPAIN, William Collman
    2. ann menzies
    3. Hi I am new to the list and wondering if anyone is researching the Spain family in Calcutta,Bengal. William Collman Spain b 1814 Kent,England and Mary Ann Florence b 1806 were married in Calcutta 1836. They had 6 children between 1837 and 1842. Mary Ann died in 1842 aged 36 and William died 1846 aged 32 both deaths in Calcutta. Their first son, also named William Collman SPAIN b 1837 marr Mary Agnes Munt in Calcutta 1864. It seems the Spain family were invariably listed as Mariner/Midshipman/Captain . They are not listed as having been employed by the East India Company therefore maybe employed by a Merchant Shipping Co. or they could have been free mariners allowed to trade in the Indian waters. Will be interested to hear from anyone connected to this family. Thank you Ann Menzies Cairns,Australia

    3. I too was disappointed with the India records on Ancestry.  In the USA we have a difficult time with 2 places, the state of Indiana vs India.  We also have a difficult time knowing how to order documents from England and which office to apply for them.  I have been known to help with look-ups on ancestry but, I have noticed that the "pleases" are not always followed up with "thank-yous". 2. Ainslie
    3. hi folks, A timely warning from Mary! I've been chasing up my various family connections since 95 and that year I found a tree for my mother's maternal line going back to the early days of Tasmanian settlement. The facts about my mother's siblings and what happened to her when her mother died within a couple of weeks of Mum's birth was so garbled by the time it had been handed down a couple more generations. When I found the mis-information I contacted the person who had set up the site and asked that he make the corrections. He told me he would get right onto the job but that's at least 15 years ago and the story still hasn't been changed. its not as if the guy was lacking in computer skills, he held a fairly good position in the Australian Defence Dept in Canberra!!! But he just couldn't be bothered doing the corrections. Meanwhile, other family connections have copied these 'facts' from his site to their online family trees and so the myth continues!!!!! Cheers Ainslie currently on holiday in Sydney Aust.

    1. [INDIA] Ancestry - India records
    2. Ann Chidley
    3. I bought Ancestry worldwide for the purpose of seeing any Indian records and was very disappointed.  For BMDs and other records you are much better off with FIBIS, British Library and and familysearch beta and the National Archives. They do have a Quarterly list for about 1912 if memory serves, Thackers 1895 and East India Company 1844.  More stuff is coming on line all the time but I doubt that BMDs will appear. One of the main benefits I have found is access to other peoples' trees. Contact me off line if you want me to do a little digging on your behalf to see if it is worth your while buying membership. Ancestry.com can be searched without a subscription. It will not give you any details before you sign up, but will give an indication of what data are held. Have you had a go? 2. a 'Please' or two usually oils the wheels on these message boards. SK
