    1. [INDIA] THE WAY BACK to India: the new film by Peter Weir
    2. d. gore
    3. A new film called “The Way Back” was released in London on Boxing Day. Listers might find it interesting in view of the background to this film which is described as “inspired by a true story” – a journey of over 4000 miles from Arctic Siberia, through Russia, Mongolia, across the Gobi desert and China, through the Tibetan mountains and across the Himalayas to India in 1942. According to a later book, this trek was achieved wearing home-made moccasins instead of boots, and without a map or compass, and avoiding all outside contact/help for fear of capture.    The only positive evidence that this unlikely trek ever occurred is when, in Calcutta in 1942 a British Army Intelligence Officer, Rupert Mayne, interviewed three emaciated and bedraggled Polish-speaking men who had been picked up by a Gurkha patrol in Sikkim. They said they had escaped from a Gulag in Siberia and walked to India. Then the story was given wings by a book published in 1956 purporting to be by a Pole who had taken part in the journey. But research by the BBC and others over the last ten years discovered that this Pole was elsewhere in 1941-42, and there was no evidence to show that his companions as named ever existed, and furthermore that the book had been ghost-written by a Daily Mail reporter, Ron Downing, who had been hunting for Yeti sightings in the Himalayas which this unlikely story conveniently included! Unsurprisingly, Downing’s book had numerous flaws which showed large parts of the tale to be fiction, but it appealed to the public as an inspiring example of man surviving against all odds, and was translated into 25 languages. However the hearsay evidence of Mayne’s 1942 interview remains the only evidence that such a trek ever occurred – that is apart from a second Pole who popped up a couple of years ago to say it was his story – but then he had had a copy of the original ‘fictional’ book to work from!   David

    3. Penni, Thank you for the raft of information and thanks too for the time that it took to find. I have looked previously for this man, even hoping that he is the John Lennon Grandfather and a fortune may come our way..... We think that he was army connected as a reference to him and family popped up in Ireland at a military base in 1912 but after that they vanish. So its now a little clearer and a wave of good fortune does help. 3. You will need to look at one or more of the original baptism records to find out William's occupation and this may give you a clue as to where to look next for a marriage record. 3. Hi Sylvia, Arnolda's maiden name was Nicholas. She married a Pyster hence widow. Yes I found that and noted the same. I am trying to find someone to translate what it says in dutch but as yet have not had it done. We are starting to wonder if now the surname is acutally Sellerbeck. A friend of mine had a look and has come back with the name of that and we have found a christening for a Johannes Sellerbeck in 1803 which does fit in. Arnolda had 3 children to her late husband (Pyster). One married in Colombo not sure what happened to the other one and the son left when he was 19yrs to attend Medical School in Calcutta so do think they did stay there. Thanks and if anyone else can help it is very much appreciated. 3. The date is interesting .... I have had a look at the actual images of (at least some of) the church registers which are on-line on FamilySearch. I first found in the second volume of marriages labelled 3c what I think is/are the Marriage Banns at Colombo on 17 July 1828: Johannes Andreas Sellembert Van Colombo Longman (could be Longmais or some other ending) met Arnolde Fredrica Pyster, Widuwe Byd van de geseformuide religie (not sure if this is right - maaybe someone familiar with Dutch language can correct it). Then I looked in the previous volume for 1802-1839, and found on p.247 (image 133 of 204) another entry dated 31st July which seems to be some sort of 'inquisition' of the couple, - which I cannot transcribe or understand* - and then below is the date 3rd September 1828, when presumably the marriage was confirmed or took place. *though after the bride's name, it says "late Nicolas" -whether that means her previous husband was Nicolas Pyster, or whether it was her maiden name, I don't know. The name Sellemberk/Sellembert does not appear in the list of DBU Genealogies, so maybe these people were only in Colombo for a short time. Good hunting! 3. Hello List Shirley said: Who can you complain to about errors in the LDS files? I found a family member married to a 2 year old, and her birth year is incomplete on the marriage registry ( 3 digits only) If it is a record from the Historical Records database for India you can't currently do anything, but there is a facility coming in the future where you will be able to make additional notes to the index, in terms of the link https://help.familysearch.org/help/viewdocument?documentId=101553&sliceId=SA L_Public&userQuery=correct+records or http://tinyurl.com/2fmrl4s In case the link is not permanent, this is what it says: Document ID: 101553. How to correct data errors or make additions to the Historical Records database Question: A name has been indexed incorrectly, or it was spelled wrong in the record, and I want to add an alternate spelling.-Can I submit additional information that I have in my possession? Answer: FamilySearch does not, at this time, have the functionality in place to accept corrections or additions to its individual database entries without reloading the entire collection. However, a future feature is under consideration that would accept corrections or additions to the searchable index. Both the original index and the correction to the index would be searchable, thus preserving the ability to locate original indexes and images as well as the corrected or added patron entries. With regards to the family member married to a 2 year old, keep in mind that different people may have the same name. In one branch of my family tree, I found four males with exactly the same name. There were two brothers, the elder of whom had died. In the next generation, there was first a nephew , and then a son , so two living cousins had exactly the same name, including middle name.
