Hello List Peter said: I am following up an entry from the Times of India 1891 (See Fibis we page) about an H.LENNON who married Annie Margaret a daughter of my Gt.Grandfather James Patrick PEMBROKE, Asst.Commissary- General. The entry says that Mr Lennon was of "St.Thomas College" but so far I have not been able to trace any more info about him... and Penny said: FamilySearch Marriage; Henry Lennon born 1865 (father Frank) married Annie M Pembroke born 1861 (father James) 28 Nov 1891 at Murree, Bengal, India The marriage took place in Murree, so St Thomas College is very likely to be St Thomas College, Murree which opened in 1882 according to this Google Books link http://books.google.com/books?id=UveLzKDlZBEC&pg=PA138 from "The magic mountains: hill stations and the British raj" by Dane Keith Kennedy, page 138 A Google Books snippet view from "Into deserts: a history of the Catholic Diocese of Lahore, 1886-1986" says: The Rome agreement provided that the Mill Hill Missionaries were to take over responsibility for the debts of St. Thomas College, Murree. Capuchin sources assess these at Rs.l. 00. Mill Hill sources say the debt amounted to Rs.25000.00. ... Other Google Books snippets suggests the Mill Hill Missionaries did take over the running of the School. It is apparent this College was in existence in 1891, when Henry Lennon married, however, there is no mention of it in the entry for Murree in the Imperial Gazetteer of India, published 1909-1931, so it is not clear just when it closed. The Archives of The Mill Hill Missionaries , or St Joseph's Missionary Society are described in this link http://www.millhillmissionaries.com/archives.html All the best for 2011 to everyone on the List Cheers Maureen (Sydney)
Hello List Allan said: I understand that my wife's relations lived in Port Blair and were in some way connected with the Cellular Jail but have not been able to obtain any information from the Jail or the BL. I am looking for the names of BONNER, PEACE, CLOUGH. The FIBIS Fibiwiki has the page Andaman Islands for general background. http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Andaman_Islands The Cellular Jail was completed in 1906, so it would appear that Allan is looking at a time period after this date. At this time the Andaman Islands were part of the Madras Presidency, although earlier the Andaman Islands seem to have been a protectorate of Burma, which was part of the Bengal Presidency. If Allan is looking for baptisms, the new LDS Family Search site has records up to March 1910, but nothing after that due to privacy issues. After 1910, Allan would need to look at the microfilms for the indexes for the baptisms for Madras (LDS or British Library) The FIBIS Fibiwiki has a page "Using LDS Microfilms" http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Using_LDS_Microfilms Cheers Maureen (Sydney)

I don't have very much data to work with yet. I have a Adam HILL. Born 23 Dec. 1856 married Ann DUNNETT born 1859. The story is passed down that a member of the Hill family removed to India and married and Indian girl. It is possible his name was Harry Thomas/Thomas Harry HILL. I don't have any time frame when this took place, but if you could check your database, "just in case" you have a Hill from New Brunswick,Canada. I would be most grateful. Thanking you for your time. The only details that we have is as follows - Her mother's name is Margaret Ellen Porritt (spelling of last name uncertain) born 22 May 1922 Calcutta. She married, around 1939, William Charles Warburton who later started using the last name of Marsden (step father John Henry Marsden). Her parents died, no dates, the father was possibly an engineer in the British Army. Margaret Ellen Porrit and her brother Dudley Porritt were placed in an unknown orphanage and later an Aunty took them under her care. If anyone can help me with any information or if they have Porritt in their family tree I would love to hear from. Thank you. Could you give some idea of when your wife's relatives were in Port Blair? I have a copy of the book "Penal Settlement in Andamans" by R C Majumdar, (c) Govt India, pub 1975, Delhi, so maay be able to find something. None of your names are referenced in the Index - but there may be some useful general information. Dear Pamela What I said to Allen earlier applies to you too. The best place for you to start looking for information is to go back through the India List archives at Rootsweb. Much has been posted about the Andamans and the jail over the last 10 years, you will be surprised how much you will learn. As I said earlier, I have posted some death/burial records for Port Blair about 4 or 5 years ago, so the archives will be a good starting place. Hi I'm researching my Father's family tree who lived in India from the 1800s through to the 1950s. The names I'm researching are: REGEL based around Trevandrum, Madras BRADBURY based around Bellary CUMBERLAND based in Madras presidency ROZARIO based around Trevandrum, Madras The REGEL tree goes back to Francis Casparus Regel (died 1823) who was the Governor of Sadras (a Dutch settlement fort approx 70km north of Madras) in 1818. He was married to Fredericka Wilhelmina (possibly Ricke). If anyone on this list has a connection to any of these names, I would love to hear from you! Frances Asked If anyone has access to Farrington's catalogue of EIC ships, could you please let me have this information? (I returned my copy some time ago and it will take ages to get it again through inter-library loan). The ship was the 'Fort William', its captain was George Simpson, Adam Cumine was 2nd lieut, it left Portsmouth on 22 May 1793, its voyage was Coast and Bay (meaning the Coromandel Coast [the south eastern coast of India, from the southern tip, up past Madras, to the delta of the Krishna River in the north] and the Bay of Bengal) and it returned to Moorings on 10 Sept 1794. Hi Allan, I don't believe you will find anything as simple as a list of staff (or inmates?) at the jail. Different government departments had their own responsibilities for the jail. A short list of possible occupations:- Public Works Dept, Indian Medical Service, Posts and Telegraphs, Marine, Police, Teachers, Clergy and of course the Military. I have no doubt that this list could be added to (agricultural experts?) but have not investigated. If your wife's ancestors were civilians then your best bet is to start with the New Calcutta Directory and Thacker's Bengal Directory. This would not only give you the relevant years but would also give the Government Department they worked for. For example, my great grandfather is noted as a PWD Accountant Port Blair. I was then able to obtain more records from the PWD Lists at the BL. I hope this helps. If you do find any shortcuts please let us know. Mark
Dear Allan I think the best place for you to start is to look back through the India List Archives on Rootsweb. Quite a bit has been posted over the years regarding Port Blair and the jail and I seem to remember I posted some death/burial details of Port Blair which I THINK included a BONNER. Well worth going back through the India List. Best wishes Liz Researching Chater or Armenians in India and Hong Kong in 2010? Please go to www.chater-genealogy.com.

If anyone has access to Farrington's catalogue of EIC ships, could you please let me have this information? (I returned my copy some time ago and it will take ages to get it again through inter-library loan). >From reading a 1793 letter now at the National Library of Scotland and connecting some other dots, I know that George Cumming sailed to India sometime after June 1793 when he was appointed to EIC service and before September of that year, as that was when he arrived. The letter mentions that the captain of the ship on which he sailed was William Simpson and one of the officers was Adam Cumine. I transcribed the name of the ship as the "Forst" but I think that is a mistake. The boat might be a "Fort" something or the other. So--if somebody is able to look up the book (or tell me how to find this information online), could I get the day on which the boat sailed, where it stopped en route, and when it reached Calcutta. Thanks so much. Frances
Hello Melanie, It is probably Hotgi (Bombay Presidency) - which is located 9 miles SE of Sholapur at the junction of the GIPR and Hotgi-Gadag sectrion of the Southern Mahratta railway line. My GGrandfather was an engine driver in the SMR located there in 1887 - so last year when my wife and I were grave hunting in Sholapur we also visited Hotgi. Regards Graeme Simpson >Any ideas where Holgi was or is?
Hi Melanie Could it by any chance be Hooghly although you mentioned Bombay ! Hooghly district is one of the districts of the state of West Bengal in India. It can alternatively be spelt Hoogli or Hugli. Thanks, Mark. It would now appear that Thomas Hope Jewett had two wives at the same time. His children with Bertha Inez/Agnes were born in Allahabad or Assam. His children with Annie/ Annie Elizabeth in Bangalore.
