I seem to recall that someone was asking after the name DUNNETT recently, so I hope this information from the Domestic Occurrences in the Times of India for 1892 is of interest. Hello Patrick If you have the time , would you be kind enough to see if there is a Robert Patrick Mullins listed in your document? Family lore says that Robert was posted there for a time and was in charge of the Sawmills but not when. Any information would be gratefully received Regards Patricia "I have a document giving the list of government appointments in the Andaman and Nicobar islands of gazetted and non-gazetted officers. Hi Patrick I would be grateful if you could look for any name of Bonner or Peace that appear in your documents. The information below may be of help. Edwin Bonner (Junior) (my wife's ggrandfather) Born on 26th February 1852 in Bangalore and was baptized in St Mark's Church on 27th April 1854. Edwin Bonner (Junior) married Grace Peace (daughter of Charles Peace and Grace Thompson) on 26th November 1879 in the Methodist Church, St Thomas' Mount. Edwin having become a Store Sergeant in 1878 (at the age of 26), Edwin served in that rank while remaining on the UL in the Ordnance Department of the Indian Army, for 11 years. He became a Sub-conductor effective 13th February 1889, at the age of 37 and thus became a fully-fledged member of the Ordnance Department. Records show that he was employed under Local Service (LS) terms and that he had been awarded a medal or medals during or before 1889 - but that was in respect of a campaign while serving with the RA or as a member of the Ordnance Department has yet to be ascertained. Between 1889 and 1895 Edwin served in the "Arsenal Office" at Fort St George. In 1986 became an Assistant Overseer there. He was pensioned on 1st April 1896 (age 43), in Madras. Edwin was serving at St Thomas Mount during 1889, and at Port Blair, Andaman Islands, during the years 1902 to 1906, and that he was in Bangalore by 1912. where he died on 6th June 1912 as a pensioned conductor. He appeared in the 1906-1908 India Army Lists as being a pensioned Conductor based at Port Blair. However, the birth entry for his daughter Alexandria, born 22 Mar 1902, gives Edwin as being a Commissioned Overseer, Port Blair. Is it possible that Edwin (Junior) was employed as a prison overseer? Grace Elizabeth Bonner (my Wife's grandmother) Born on 2 Nov 1886 but not sure where. She married Charles Fennimore Cooper on 26th Jul 1906 at Port Blair. Charles was a Superintendent of Land Records and work in Burma, India and the Malay Straits and was living in Mergui at time of Marriage. His father William Henry Cooper was an Assistant Apothecary and later became a Surgeon, believed to be with the army! Vincent Edwin Bonner Peace Bonner Son of Edwin Bonner (junior) and married Grace Peace (daughter of Charles Peace and Grace Thompson) on 26th November 1879 in the Methodist Church, St Thomas' Mount. born on 11th May 1891 Vincent first marriage was to Beryl Chambers Owen on 1st Dec 1910 in Port Blair, where he was an overseer and that the couple had a daughter, Dorothy Peace Bonner. Vincent's re-married twenty-one years later, as a divorcee to Eileen Bertha Pearson on 9th Mar 1937 when Vincent resided in Calcutta and worked as a Forest Officer. What happened in these 20+ years is a blank. It would be interesting to know for how many years Vincent lived in Port Blair. His father Edwin (Junior) was posted there in 1896 when Vincent would have been about eight and we know that Vincent was working on the island as late as 1916 in, we think, the same profession as his father Edwin. Where did Vincent go to school, where did he work - was it at the prison like his father? Alexandra Peace Bonner Born 22nd November 1902, Port Blair I thank you in advance for looking for any information. Hello list Vicki asked about Shipping records and Shirley provided some good advice. Another suggestion is that many of the Australian records to and from Sydney have been indexed and digitised by Mary Anne Warner and volunteers. These can be searched at http://mariners.records.nsw.gov.au/ Also, the National Library of Australia is in the process of digitising all historical Australian newspapers and it was common to publish passenger and shipping movements in the local press. I have had some real wins finding people here when I could not trace them on the shipping records. Often the newspapers report names of all passengers, not just initials or Mr and Mrs too, so often more valuable. Go to http://www.nla.gov.au/ and search under the Australian newspapers tab on right hand side. Good luck! Robin
The 1895 edition is available through an Ancestry subscription. It may also be possible to purchase a CD-ROM of this edition from ArchiveCDbooks Ireland - it is still listed in their catalogue and they presently have a 50% off winter sale! http://www.archivecdbooks.ie/acatalog/india.html The Indiaman has apparently digitised the 1905 Thackers which is available on multiple CDs at enormous cost. Other than that you will need to go to a library which holds these (BL in England, State Libraries of NSW and WA in Australia). If you posted the names of interest, some kind person might even do a look-up for you! Hello List Vicki said: Frank & Elizabeth Archer were believed to have had two children who died in India as well before they went back to England and subsequently emigrated to Australia. Could someone suggest how I check the passenger lists to find them, either on the trips to and from India and to Australia from England. Their first child born in Enfield Australia was born in March 1888. I suspect they paid their own way to Australia so it will be hard to find them. The FIBIS Fibiwiki "Passenger Lists" http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Passenger_lists has links for *Ancestry , which has UK incoming passenger lists 1878 - 1960 containing the names of people arriving at United Kingdom ports from places outside Europe, so Vicki may find a record here. *FindMyPast, which has UK outbound passenger lists 1890 - 1960 . However these dates are outside Vicki's range. Unless Vicki has evidence the family returned to England before migrating to Australia, it is possible they travelled directly from India to Australia. If the Enfield, Australia is the Enfield in Sydney, the NSW State Archives at the Rocks has microfilms of shipping records, but I'm unsure of the date range. I was looking at 1913, (without success unfortunately) Cheers Maureen (Sydney)
Hello List There has been an addition to the FIBIS Fibiwiki page "Directories online", under the heading Army Lists. The book is called "Lists of the officers of His Majesty's, and the Hon. Company's troops, serving under the presidency of Bombay. Adjutant General's Office. January 1st 1798 The link is available through http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Directories_online Also , for Joan who enquired, the FIBIS Fibiwiki page "Directories online" advises there is a 1895 Thacker's Indian Directory available through Ancestry. 1895 is also available on a CD, otherwise Thacker's is available at the British Library and some other large libraries. Cheers Maureen (Sydney)
Hi Patric, Would it be too much to ask if you could see if the name Charles Edward Walker appears on your document. Hi This is my first posting to this list and I am trying to find some details on Francis(Frank) Frederick ARCHER who spent some time in India and also his wife. Elizabeth West went out to India from England to marry Frank on 25 August 1885 at the Wesleyan Mission Church at Royapetta Madras. I have an advertisement which states: Mr Frank Archer, Practical Watch & Clock Maker from London - begs to inform the INHABITANTS OF COCHIN, that He is now here on a visit, and is ready to do all kinds of repairs to Watches, Clocks, Musical Boxes, Sewing Machines etc etc. Will call at private residences if required. CHARGES MODERATE. Apply to the above at Mr F B MICHAEL'S, SHIP SUPPLIER, PRINCES' STREET. I also have family papers that state he was at the Telegraph Works, Madras RY CO, ARCONUM, MADRAS, INDIA. Another letter is from a Lt Col E Begbie, Q's O Madras Sappers, dated 5 July 1885, Bangalore. It is addressed to Frank Archer and speaks about some work being done at (Mr) or Mt Helios.....My assistant, Quarter Master Sergeant Beard will arrive at Arconum....and look over the alterations. Frank & Elizabeth Archer were believed to have had two children who died in India as well before they went back to England and subsequently emigrated to Australia. Could someone suggest how I check the passenger lists to find them, either on the trips to and from India and to Australia from England. Their first child born in Enfield Australia was born in March 1888. I suspect they paid their own way to Australia so it will be hard to find them. I also welcome any contact with anyone tracing the same family. Thanking you Vicki

HI All I Wish everybody a very Happy and Healthy 2011 I thank Mark, Liz, Sylvia and Maureen for your informative and useful comments. Sorry for lack of information in my original email but I attach more information on the Bonner, Peace, Clough (Cluff), and Cooper Clans Edwin Bonner (Junior) Edwin Bonner (Senior) and his wife Elizabeth had 15 children, His son Edwin Bonner (Junior) was the second child and eldest son. Edwin Bonner Junior was born on 26th February 1852 in Bangalore and was baptized in St Mark's Church on 27th April 1854. Edwin Bonner (Junior) married Grace Peace (daughter of Charles Peace and Grace Thompson) on 26th November 1879 in the Methodist Church, St Thomas' Mount. The children of this marriage were:- Alice Ethel Bonner, born 10th July 1881 (Moira Breen's maternal grandmother - Moira is my wife's 2nd cousin) Margaret (Poppy) Bonner, born 28th November 1884 Grace Elizabeth Bonner, born 2nd November, 1885 (my wife's maternal grandmother) Vincent Bonner born 11 May 1891 Alexandra Peace Bonner, born 22nd November 1902, Port Blair Edwin having become a Store Sergeant in 1878 (at the age of 26), Edwin served in that rank while remaining on the UL in the Ordnance Department of the Indian Army, for 11 years. Grace Elizabeth Bonner (my Wife's grandmother) Was born on 2 Nov 1886 but not sure where. She married Charles Fennimore Cooper on 26th Jul 1906 at Port Blair. Charles was a Superintendent of Land Records and work in Burma, India and the Malay Straits and was living in Mergui at time of Marriage. On page 126 he describes a meeting with Dolly Bonner at McCluskiegunge. Dolly is now dead and her house has been left to the church. I quote from the book "At "Bonner Bhavan" whose grand wrought iron gates were designed as peacocks, I talked with Dolly Bonner, a bitter but intelligent and controversial old lady .." I am looking for where the families lived what they did in Port Blair during these years. Would also like to hear from anybody else who is searching Bonner, Peace, Clough (Cluff), Cooper, Thomson, Korb in India, Burma and the Malay Straits. Regards allan
