    3. Hello List Norm, Extra Ship: When requirements to ship cargo exceeded the amount of space provided by the Regular ships, the EIC would charter one or more vessels specially for one particular season's voyage, out to the east and back. These were known as the Extra Ships. In practice, however, an Extra Ship was often hired for several years in succession if the need was there and it performed well. http://www.eicships.info/help/shiprole.html from Andrea Cordani's website The voyage could be one of the voyages of the Larkins (3) 1811/2 St Helena and Bengal. 3. Penni I hope I told you that you'd found the correct William Vallange. I posted the following on FIBIS: I have decided to start again to attempt to find the Indian mother of my Gt Gt Grandmother, Mary Agnes Alexander Condell. Mary Agnes was born in Bangalore, around 1827/28. She had a brother, Charles Alexander Condell, born around 1829/30. Their father, Major Joseph Alexander Condell of the HEICS, returned from India around 1834 with his two children and they are in the 1841 census living in Cheadle/Cresswell with their widowed aunt, Mary Bucknall (née Condell), a schoolmistress and sister of their father, who seemed to disown them (he did not mention them in his will and in 1836 he married a 19-yr-old in Aberdeen Scotland. The family were all devout Roman Cathollics, and Cresswell has an interesting RC history. Mary Agnes Alexander Condell, was married in St Mary's Chapel, Cresswell on 12th May 1849, to James Joseph Collins, a tailor from Chester. I do not know what happened to her brother Charles. The person I would dearly love to find is her Indian mother, who did not appear in the 1849 Cresswell marriage entry, sent to me by the present Priest of St Mary's (and two other parishes - a busy man). As a Major in the HEICS (an interpreter in the 31st Native Infantry) the father of her children must have had some record somewhere of an Indian "wife" and family although he retired when his children were very young and their mother may well have died, Any suggestions will be gratefully received. I am not sure how many websites and blogs are connected but I've copied it here (slightly edited), just in case someone comes up with an answer. Ronnie in Bangalore tried but failed. In fact I posted a photograph of my Gt Grandmother, Catherine Mary, on his website, instead of her mother, Mary Agnes Condell. Genealogy can be extremely muddling at times! Now I come to think of it he was a Captain when in the 31st Native Infantry and retired when he was a Major the 1st Native Infantry. At one time they called him John Alexander Condell, just to make things difficult. Dian

Any BMD records for any of the names mentioned would be fantastic to help resolve the missing link to connect the family, would greatly appreciate any sibling information. 3. Does anyone know if any records exist of the Directors of the East India Company at the British Library other than the list of names and dates. I only know that my ancestor Charles Chambers was a Director from 1755 - 1757 and again from 1763 to 1768. His son Charles Chambers Jr was also a director after him. Charles Chambers Sr was also Consul of Madeira. Surprisingly but happily, the FIBIS site has the birth record of his son John Chambers in Madeira. >From newspaper and burial records, I know that Charles Chambers Sr died in London in 1776 and no age was recorded but I am trying to find out when and where he was born. Thank you. Pippa

    3. Penni, no wonder we have problems! I'll have a look at the Iver 1871 census. In the meantime I have tracked down the surname Evers. Mayor Henry Condell, in his will dated 24 Oct 1971, left Melbourne Lodge and a dwelling house next to Melbourne Lodge, Ealing, for the use of his son William Vallange Condell and Arthur Ever of Marlborough St, Regent St. in the county of Middlesex. No idea why Arthur Evers is connected to the Condells. The will is quite difficult to read but not impossible! Dian

    3. Hello Penni The surname was often spelled Cundell in the same family as Condell. Oddly, my Major Joseph Alexander Condell (HEICS) had a nephew called William Vallange Condell, born 1927 in Hobart, son of Joseph's brother, Henry Condell, first Mayor of Melbourne when it was a new town. William Vallange Condell married twice, once in Australia and again in England where he lived for the rest of his life. I would love to be able to say you had found him in Kensington, but the age is wrong and he dropped the surname Condell, calling himself William Vallange, as did his son Clement Vallange Condell, who called himself Clement Vallange Vallange! The Mayor's wife was Marion Vallange from Tranent in Scotland, hence the use of her surname. All the best, Dian
