I have today received from the Familysearch new photocopying service death records of my Gt Grandparents Edward Lloyd died and buried at Kararchi Holy Trinity 8th June 1883 and the actual record gives the cause of death. Jane Wilson Lloyd his wife died Allahabad 31st August 1878 and died from Cholera. This is an excellent service and has only taken four weeks for these records to arrive in my e mail box and increased my knowledge of this family https://familysearch.org/blog/en/policy-change-patrons-requesting-photocopies-family-history-library-salt-lake-city-utah/ I was given this link from members of this list so thank you and hope others can use it too. I have the name Maneckji Pestonji Tuback born about 1827 probably in Bombay. He was Commissioner of the Baroda Police. He married a Parsi and his children were Parsi. His father may have been Pestonjee Merwanjee Tuback born about 1809. What I am having difficulty with is a Parsi having what appears to be a non Parsi surname. Is it not unusual if not unheard of particularly in those times for the children of a mixed Parsi non-Parsi marriage to be Parsees? I am guessing that Tuback is German and maybe Jewish. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? David

Here is a HENRIQUES family group, who lived in Bombay, India. I hope that this posting assists some of you HENRIQUES researchers, on this list. Anthony Joseph HENRIQUES, son of Antonio Francisco and Maria Francisca HENRIQUES, was born about 1850. Anthony married (1) Luiza Quiteria dALMEIDA (c1857 1886) and they lived in Gorai, Bombay, where they had two children. Luiza, aged 28, died on April 22nd., 1886 and was buried with m.i. in mid-nave in Holy Magi Church, Gorai. Anthony married (2) Monica Francisca GOMES (c1863 1908). Monicas parents were Evaristo Francisco GOMES and Clara ESPERANCE from Bandra West. Anthony and Monica lived in Bandra, in Pali and in Boran. Anthony died on September 25th., 1904 and Monica on December 26th., 1908 and they were buried in St. Andrews churchyard, Bandra, just south of the statue of Christ the King. Anthony and Luiza, his first wife, had issue: A. Esperance Clementine HENRIQUES, born about 1882. On February 25th., 1904, in St. Andrews Church, Bandra, Clementine married Alexander Lawrence Nicholas DSOUZA. They had issue. B. This will be a step forward, but what a pity that it is FindMyPast that is doing this rather than Ancestry. A major issue with FindMyPast is that for many of its databases (I cannot say all because I have not used all of them) there is no 'browse' facility - that is, having looked at one page you cannot browse the pages either side or, should you wish to, browse the entire dataset. In contrast, on Ancestry you can browse the entire dataset. To give an example, FindMyPast released merchant seamen's records in 2012. The dataset is not browsable. The search fields are first name, surname, county of birth, place of birth, year of birth and discharge number. For the period in which I am interested, the discharge number is not relevant, and it would be desirable to search on register ticket number, but this number has not been transcribed and the search field does not exist. In practice searches are conducted on name, but this relies on the name being accurately transcribed. Otherwise, the searcher is reduced to guessing what the transcription may be - and believe me I have found some that were previously unknown to me. But some records of known seamen still elude me because I cannot browse the dataset. I am quite certain that the usefulness of the proposed digitised India Office records will be an order of magnitude greater if a browse facility is incorporated, and I would suggest FIBIS might like to liaise with FMP on this matter. For the record, I have a subscription to both the pay-to-view sites mentioned in this post. Noel
Hello List Norm, the FIBIS Fibiwiki has a page DNA http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=DNA For information, if you are a FIBIS member you can listen to a lecture in the Social Network section of the FIBIS website, and there is an article in a recent FIBIS Journal. If you are not a FIBIS member, there is reference to a book on the subject "DNA and Social Networking - A Guide to Genealogy in the Twenty-First Century" by Debbie Kennett Cheers Maureen (Sydney) -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of norman archibald Sent: Friday, 1 March 2013 12:19 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [INDIA] Genetic Testing at 23andme.com Rohan, What test would you recommend I take to determine ethnicity.? Noel wrote: I am quite certain that the usefulness of the proposed digitised India Office records will be an order of magnitude greater if a browse facility is incorporated, and I would suggest FIBIS might like to liaise with FMP on this matter. --ooOoo-- Of course, we are as anxious as all listers to see how matters will turn out when FindMyPast finally get on line and when this will be. It is some time since we have been in contact with them but understand that they are rather in the hands of the British Library in terms of how they present the India Office Records. It may be known that FMP has a contract with FIBIS whereby their visitors, who are unable to interpret some of the special terms, abbreviations, placenames, etc., will be led to our FibiWiki where we hope to provide explanations (free of charge). If, in general, anybody comes across terms and abbreviations which are not included in our wiki, please let us know and we shall try to learn and post them. It may be noticed that, in view of FMP's impending entrance into this pursuit, FIBIS Volunteers are currently focusing our efforts on the provision of data which do not appear in the formal India Office Records. These include BMD announcements from various newspapers and pictures of gravestone inscriptions. May I plea for any further volunteers to help with our work to extend our database further? Thanks and Good Hunting! Peter Bailey Chairman Families in British India Society www.fibis.org

David This is not a very helpful reply to your query, but I had a friend as a student, David Walker, now sadly deceased. He became a successful costume designer and told me he was related to the Sassoons through his mother, who looked very similar to my part-Indian grandmother. I will look for the card he sent telling me this just in case his mother was the Annie or Dorothy you mention. He met some of his distant Sassoon relatives. Sorry not to be more precise. Like you, I have come back to search but have got no further with my Indian ancestor. Dian

I am coming back to a query I have raised on the List in the past, this time with a little more information. The person I am interested in is Jacob Ezekiel Ezra SASSOON born 1881/2. Warren, 1. By 'Volunteer Decoration' I assume that you are referring to the Volunteer Officers' Decoration, instituted in 1892? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volunteer_Officers'_Decoration 2. The ribbon for the above was 38mm wide and dark green. There is a good description here http://www.northeastmedals.co.uk/britishguide/territorial_decoration/volunte er_officers_decoration.htm and a number of images that you can see via Google Images. 3. The information on the Delhi Durbar Medal of 1911 is here http://www.northeastmedals.co.uk/britishguide/the_delhi_durbar_medal_1911.ht m. Officially the ribbon is 32mm wide, dark blue with two central red stripes 3.5mm wide. However, some illustrations seem to show a lighter shade of blue. Once again there are a number of images that you can see using Google Images. 4. Medals are often found with replacement ribbons. Noel
Hi All, The price of the genetic testing service at 23andme.com was recently reduced to *$99*. I bought it a couple of months ago when it was $299. :( 23andme has a new feature called Ancestry Composition that can tell you fairly accurately if you have any South Asian ancestry. https://www.23andme.com/ancestry/recent/#ancestry-composition I found one previously un-known half second cousin through the service. They currently have only 200,000 people tested but are targeting to test a million by the end of the year. When I tested it took 3 weeks to get results, but results are now taking 8 weeks or more due to the backlog created by the revised prices. Regards, Rohan
