    3. Thank you for that, Peter! It must have run in the family, because I have found in the LONDON GAZETTE January 4, 1895 that my g-grandfather John Pearson Vaillant is listed as an Insolvent, too! As he was running two families at the same time (I am from the legitimate line!) and fathering children within a couple of months of each other from both women, I am not surprised that he was bankrupted! I see that a Freddie Colquhoun asked for info re the Vaillants in 2006 on the message board, but have been unable to contact him. I hope I have mailed this to the right address - I find the several email addresses below very confusing (I am getting old!) - Audrey von Lintzgy -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: 17 March 2013 16:30 To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [INDIA] Vaillants of Rangoon, Burma/Calcutta, India This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. 2. Helen Jackson
    3. Hello Marian and Peter, Would you please include me in any discoveries as I'm very keen to find information regarding a Captain John Clarke RN (d. Oct 1776 Madras). He was born about 1730 - where I don't know. I suspect Ireland or maybe London. After all these years Marian there is a vague possibility of a Clarke link, perhaps? When in London last year, I saw the (extremely faint) marriage entry for Capt John Clarke RN to Mary Rogers 1760 in Madras. This very legible entry is found on the FIBIS site, but it was good to see the original. Cheers Helen - Brisbane

    3. Marion asked: Peter Many thanks for the information on Ships Journals. You have jogged my memory and looking through my papers on Thomas Clarke I have just found notes referring to Ships Journals IOR/L/Mar A-B 1605-1856. I now recall that you gave me this lead some years ago which I followed up and I subsequently found the following reference: Royal Admiral 1786-1788(1) IOR/L/MAR/B/338D (Journal), 338N (1)( Ledger) 3338N(4)( Imprest.) Would these have been three separate files? --ooOoo-- Yes, Marion, when you get a chance, please go to the British Library and request the L/MAR/B/338D and 338N Volumes. These should each separately include lists of the names and ranks of the ship's crew (with dates of engagement/discharge) plus details of their pay. The scuffle grew outrageous and no less than 6 sailors were forced through portholes overboard and were with extreme difficulties saved from death. The seasonable interference of the Officers at length quieted the tumult, but not before several men were desperately wounded. Derby Mercury January 1787" Would there be Muster Rolls for the British contingent on this ship? Marion --ooOoo-- Thank you so much Marion for this interesting 'snippet'. Yes, indeed. There may well be both a Commander's Journal and a Crew List for this voyage in the L/MAR/B series in the India Office Records. My guess is that it would have needed about four Indiamen to have taken the two Hanoverian Regiments to India. It should be relatively easy to locate the records of at least three. I understand that one of the ships foundered off Rio de Janeiro en route to India. The soldiers and crew were saved to go on to Madras and I hope that the Commander saved his journal too! 2. Maureen Evers
    3. Hello List David, although it is not directly connected with your enquiry, this Rootsweb India Message Board thread, to which I gave a reply, seemed to have a Parsi connection. So perhaps there was some intermarriage http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.asia.india.general/417.1/mb.ashx There are FIBIS Fibiwiki pages German and Jewish http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=German and http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Jewish although the early Jews in India seemed to be Baghdadi Jews, rather than European Jews, so perhaps you should be focusing on the German connection. Cheers Maureen -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of David Railton Sent: Saturday, 9 March 2013 8:44 AM To: [email protected]; INDIA-BRITISH-RAJ Subject: [INDIA] TUBACK I have the name Maneckji Pestonji Tuback born about 1827 probably in Bombay. He was Commissioner of the Baroda Police. He married a Parsi and his children were Parsi. His father may have been Pestonjee Merwanjee Tuback born about 1809. What I am having difficulty with is a Parsi having what appears to be a non Parsi surname. Is it not unusual if not unheard of particularly in those times for the children of a mixed Parsi non-Parsi marriage to be Parsees? I am guessing that Tuback is German and maybe Jewish. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? David
