Dear Geri Thank you for looking at the Dutch Archives for Albertus Francois Van Holt. I have no information on him apart from [1] the announcement [from FIBIS database] of his daughters birth in 1799 in Madras., [2] the death of his wife in 1857 in Madras, and [3] his possible death also from the FIBIS database in 1817, the transcription reads A. J. Van Holt not A. F. Van Holt, and there may have been an error in the original notice of this event. regards and thanks Mary Anne 1. Albertus Francois van Holt (Gearoidin Dent) Message: 1 Date: Fri, 29 Mar 2013 14:49:57 +0100 From: Gearoidin Dent <[email protected]> Subject: [INDIA] Albertus Francois van Hol Someone recently asked me via the India list to do a check up for the above person in the Dutch archives. I have checked 'WieWasWie' and also The Hague Archives for this person, but unfortunately no success. The only person who came close to this name was a Reinier Francois Van Holt, who is registered in the VOC passengers list as a Soldier arriving in Indonesia on the 9th September 1741. He was discharged in 1753. It's possible that this person is a relative given the similarity in name, but of course I cannot verify this. I should add that the Dutch archives are only just starting to put stuff online in one central location, so its possible that at some future stage, this above person will show up. Otherwise, one needs to know where the person was born or baptised in order to do any research. The good thing is, that mother's maiden names are always given, since one never loses their maiden name even when they marry. Very often if you know the mother's name, you can also r! esearch under the maiden name as all records, regarding births and deaths will show the mother's maiden name. Well, I wish whoever it was who made the request, lots of luck with their research. I'm sorry that I don't know their name, but I accidently deleted the India List email. If SKS has access to British newspapers on Findmypast, I would appreciate details of marriage announcement in Chelmsford Chronicle 20 Sept 1912, snippet of which reads "...Mrs B. Bunyer, and granddaughter of Col. R.Angelo....at St Thomas Cathedral Bombay....The ceremony was performed by the Rev. A.W. Sawtell, Senior Presidency Chaplain..." Leslie George Town, Penang

Does anyone have access to 1) a history of the above, and/or 2) records for the above? A 2002 post shows that there are records held by the community (http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/INDIA/2002-09/1031947746) I know from research (on the web and via print books) that C Troop formed in 1805 as the Rocket Troop Madras Horse Artillery. Also, that it saw time in China during the Opium Wars, and the second Burma War. Gaps in my ancestor's 10 child timeline (as built from Family Search data) suggest that he saw time in both arenas; possibly also in the Sikh wars of 1845-49, and the second war in China (1856-59). It also appears he left the service after the Mutiny and the restructure of the armies in 1858. My ancestor is Thomas CRONAN. I found a FIBIS record showing his marriage in 1839 at St Thomas Mount, Madras. He died in 1875 in Madras. My goal is to learn more about C Troop, and to determine where in Ireland Thomas CRONAN came from. If no-one can assist, I understand my best course of action is to access documents at the National Archives in Kew, and the British Library (India Office) in London. All advice welcome. Thank you, Majella Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hello List Phillip, the FIBIS Fibiwiki page Police will give you an idea of the records available http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Police I have never looked at records for Police, but they do sound quite complicated. However even if you find out details about his career, I think it is very unlikely you would find any information about "who his first wife was and if he had any children with her". If you were lucky you might find where he had come from. One of the links on the Fibiwiki page is a book by an author I. Tyrrell who joined the Madras Police in 1860. He had been in a British Army Regiment in India, so it is possible James Grant had a similar background. Coincidentally I. Tyrrell was appointed an Inspector of Police and went to Nellore, but I did not see a mention of James Grant in the chapters about Nellore. Debra - When I was looking for a Meppen ancestor who went to India in 1767 on a VOC ship I received a great deal of help from a very nice lady (Mrs van Hoof) who was the Senior Archivist of the 1st Dept, General State Archives, Prinz Willem-Alexanderhof 20, 's Gravenhage, Netherlands. She explained that all personnel in each VOC establishment are registered according to professional category and in a strict hierarchical order. My chap was in Pulicat, the Coromandel establishment and she managed to find him, helped by the fact he was the only Meppen mentioned. She was able to give me full details of his career including his salary right up to the time that his wages stopped in mid-July 1795 when Coromandel was handed over to the British. I think she found him in the Land Muster Rolls for the relevant establishment. I received this information a very long time ago so I doubt Mrs van Hoof will still be there but these records should still be available. I am not sure what your original request was but I hope this information may be of interest Regards Marion Meppen-Walter
Dear Geri Thank you for very much for your interest. I shall try the mentioned site to see if any of the Salders listed are part of my family. Thanks again Debra

Passengers from Ireland probably travelled through Britain. Although I dont know of any on-line passenger lists for voyages starting in Ireland there are lists available on-line from that period of journies starting in Britain. I dont know that you will find arrivals in India. I have found that troops are not usually always listed on published passenger lists but family travelling with them sometime are. If you give me the names and years of birth of the individuals concerned I will see if I can find anything. David Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I agree, the army service record should unlock some answers. So I will be organising my application for this soon. I too have had trouble in finding a death record of Elizabeth on the various records and sources. It might mention her death in her father's army service record hopefully. With regards to the family travelling on a troop ship, would you know if there are records of people who travelled on these? If so, would you know where or who I can contact to get access to them? It will be good to have date for their arrival and departure, rather than estimated before and after dates. With regards to the towns, they could probably be spelt wrong sorry. My Dad's cousin who worked on the tree years ago talked to an older brother and sister of Elizabeth's and she scribbled the names of the towns in her notes. She has emailed me the info from her notes, and she told me that she wasn't sure of the spelling of each. You are right though, the towns will probably be mentioned on the army service record.
