Author: MajellaP Surnames: RAYNEY, HORTON Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.asia.india.general/2792/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I'm hoping for a connection with the siblings and antecedents of Jane Adelaide RAYNEY, born in Coimbatore, India, in 1880. She died in Calcutta, India in 1921. Jane's father was Patrick (or Thomas) RAYNEY, of the Royal Garrison Army (RGA). Possibly 9th Company, Heavy Battery, Western Division as she married her first husband (Samuel George HORTON) at the Trimulgherry (Madras) station in 1899, and the certificate is from its register. Her first husband was with the 72nd Company RGA Heavy Battery, and died at the Nowgong station in 1903. I've found possible RAYNEY uncles and aunts via Family Search, but not her birth record, her mother's name, nor any siblings. If I'm correct, her father was born in the Madras Presidency in 1860 (or 1861 if Patrick William), and died before 1904, or at latest by 1911. I have tried the London Gazette, 1911 British census (in which Jane appears) and FIBIS. Unless a divorce may have occurred and Patrick married again in 1901... however, I understood that Jane's mother lived with her in the first decade of the 1900s. Surname spelled 6 known ways on Family Search including RAINEY, RAINY, REYNEY, REINY. Any help welcome. Thanks. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Herbert was in the Army and have been told that he was in the Army in India somewhere between 1920 and 1930, a long shot I know. They had various children born in England but Herbert Jnr was born in India. Is anyone able to help in finding his birth please? I am not sure what part of India Herbert Snr would have been stationed though. Kind regards Kathryn Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hello List Family Search has recently added a series of records, as images, called "India, Gujarat Diocese Protestant Church Records, 1854-2012" https://familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/India,_Gujarat_Diocese_Church_Records _(FamilySearch_Historical_Records) or http://tinyurl.com/cv6hclk It is stated "This collection contains records in the Hindi and Gujarati languages", however one of the sample records shown is in English (a page of 1944 baptisms at Christ Church, Ahmedabad City http://tinyurl.com/bnw24on ), so at least some of the records are in English. I think it is likely that most of the older records, when these are available, will be in English. These records would be worth checking out if you are interested in this area. Here is a page of 1856 deaths at Ahmedabad I found in the record images https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1971-33888-41257-10?cc=2075198&wc=M 9SD-BYL:n751932677 or http://tinyurl.com/d9yuqeq Cheers Maureen (Sydney)

Author: maureenr5 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.asia.india.general/2788.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Majella, the FIBIS Fibiwiki has a page Madras Army, which has a section on records http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Madras_Army I suggest you look at the "Registers of Madras Army European Soldiers IOR/L/MIL/11/101-108" which are also available on LDS microfilm. If you want to know where Thomas CRONAN was posted, you could also look at the muster records, also available on LDS microfilm. As he left the Madras Army in 1858 there may be a record for him in the "Discharge Papers of Madras Army European Soldiers IOR/L/MIL/11/277-282". AS far as I am aware, these latter records have not been filmed by the LDS, so you would need a researcher to look at them at the British Library. There is also a FIBIS Fibiwiki page Madras Horse Artillery http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Madras_Horse_Artillery Cheers Maureen Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
