This probably doesn't help, but the name Esaias is a version of Isaiah. I've never come across it as a surname, but there are 11 guys in my ancestry with Esaias as a first name, and even more have it as a middle name. The line in question is not Jewish and originated in Devon (afaik) with the first use of the name in 1656. The last one died in 1986. I keep trying to persuade childbearing members of the family to revive it, to no avail! ;) Joss Rosemary wrote: A friend of mine has asked for help in searching for his ancestor, William Peter Esaias, whose father was Peter Esaias. They lived possibly in Allahabad around the 1860s onwards. I have done a search on the LDS site, but the name is elusive. I am wondering if it is of Jewish or Armenian origin, hence the lack of entries in church registers.

Hello List Edmond and Michael I had the same problem and wrote to the List Administrator [email protected] I am now receiving the India Digest (previously I was receiving the India List) It does sound as though there is a general problem with emails coming from the List, but not emails going to the List, as evidenced by the Archives. I am trying to locate the marriage certificate for my great grandparents which is shown in the above index as "Louisa Jane Robinson marrying Ephraim Robert Dale in 1886, 198, 157, 1886" I would like to find her maiden name and her parents marriage so that I can identify the family Indian name. I would be very grateful for any suggestions for the locating the certificate and identifying her maiden name as well as the maiden name of her mother. Thank you Jeremy Randall

Hello List Nancy, The Access to Archives catalogue gives the following records at the British Library. There may be additional references. Perhaps they may contain a muster roll, or other details of recruits. IOR/F/4/56/1299 Jul 1779-Dec 1798 Establishment of a Corps of Militia at Calcutta, to consist of Europeans, Armenians and Eurasians. IOR/F/4/193/4361(1) Nov 1805-Jan 1806 Disbandment of the Calcutta European Militia Cavalry and Infantry.
