The following announcement appeared in the West Briton newspaper, Truro, Cornwall, UK on 20 February 1857 and is forwarded from the CORNISH-GEN List. I have no further information, nor any interest in the family. I purely forward it to the List in the hope that it's of use to someone. Best wishes, Tom Thompson, St Agnes, Cornwall. ---0--- West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser - 20 February 1857 At the Lodge, Kandy, the wife of Sir William Carpenter ROWE, Chief Justice of Ceylon, of a son.

Author: sophiejayuk Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.asia.india.general/2796/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello, My name is Sophie Jay and I'm trying to research the history of McLeod Ganj, sometimes called Upper Dharamshala, in Himachal Pradesh. McLeod Ganj is world famous today as the seat of the Dalai Lama and Tibetan government in exile, and is rapidly developing into one of India's top tourism hot-spots. However, whilst quite a bit is known about the town as a Tibetan settlement, very little seems to be known about its life as a British hill station from the mid 19th century onwards. I know that the area was struck by a catastrophic earthquake in 1905, which killed 20,000 people, and that most of the existing buildings were destroyed. A small number of buildings dating back to the 1920s and 30s are still standing, most of which are located within the nearby army cantonment. What I'm looking for is any information about and photographs of people who lived in McLeod Ganj during any period of its history. Do you have an ancestor who lived there? Did they keep a diary or were any anecdotes handed down? How did people feel about the place? What did they do there? Any shred of information, no matter how small, would no doubt prove a vital piece in the jigsaw of McLeod Ganj's largely forgotten past. I can be contacted on: 07778121382, or at: [email protected] Many thanks. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hello List Further to my email below, unfortunately, the FamilySearch website has recently advised online viewing is restricted to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. These images may also be viewed at a FamilySearch Centre at no cost. I was unaware when I made the original post that these restrictions applied, so I apologise for raising expectations. Cheers Maureen From: "Maureen Evers" < [email protected]> Subject: [INDIA] FamilySearch website now has British Army WW1 Service and Pension records Date: Wed, 3 Apr 2013 15:37:57 +1100 Hello List Service and pension records from World War 1 from the National Archives, Kew have been available on the pay site Ancestry.com. for a while. These are British Army WWI Service Records 1914-1920 also called WO 363 records and known as the 'Burnt Documents, and British Army WWI Pension Records 1914-1920 also called WO 364 records. These records have recently become available on the free website FamilySearch as images. https://familysearch.org/search/collection/2125045 They are explained in this FamilySearch Research Wiki https://familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/United_Kingdom,_World_War_I_Service_R ecords_(FamilySearch_Historical_Records or http://tinyurl.com/bnydrgs Although the names on the images have not been transcribed, it appears the images are grouped alphabetically, so these records are an alternative if you do not have access to Ancestry Cheers Maureen

Good afternoon all, I've added these names to our family file, through marriages just found, all to a REEKS, and wondered if anyone has them in their family trees? I don't have records as yet, but the marriages took place in Agra : Delhi : and Allahabad, between 1923 and 1932 Our Josephine Julia CLARKE married a Frederick REEKS .(.RICKS also)...in 1898 at Barielly, and I've found 6 children....Frederick, Joseph, Arthur, Edward, Josephine and Esther REEKS. I have Josephine Julia's marriage cert, and have sent for her death record, but have these new names in the tree now, perhaps someone else has them also. Message Board Post: Hello, I'm interested in making contact with others who have a family connection with the British Raj and have inherited family recipes from that period. The person making the inquiry below may want to visit the website and contact the cookbook author, Bridget White-Kumar: http://anglo-indianfood.blogspot.ca/ Best, Sharon My grandfather was born in Ahmedabad, and through him we have inherited numerous recipes that we enjoy to this day. We are all familiar with Indian dishes that have been anglicised in the UK in modern times(Chicken Tikka Massala etc.), however, I am fascinated by the recipes that emerged during that earlier phase of anglo-Indian contact on the sub-continent. The fusion of Indian and British tastes led to the creation of a unique style of cooking that does not seem to be formerly documented anywhere. However, I am sure it is still enjoyed by families across the world and passed down from generation to generation. My ultimate aim is to document these recipes (with appropriate attribution) before they are lost. I would be very interested to hear from anyone who has recipes to share and would like to participate.

A couple of years back, when I was using their service, I waited 9 months!! It was just after they had "improved" the service to Australia, and our films were sent to "outer Mongolia" first before being sent to Aus! I found it less stressful (though not cheaper)to fly to the UK and go to the British Library. The British Library Staff are on the whole wonderful and so helpful.
