    2. MARJORIE GAHAN
    3. Dear List - if the following message feels like deja vous - it's just me persevering in the hunt for my family's history! Can anybody give me any info regarding people on the ground doing look ups in church records in India. Bombay, and areas of Mahim, Parel,Byculla and Dadar specifically. I would be quite prepared for research fees. I have been banging my head against that brick wall, contacting individual churches by letter, and apart from diligent response from Bangalore and Mysore, received no replies. I have a book which belonged to my late grandmother entitled Indian Domestic Economy, 7th edition published Calcutta 1871 which is fascinating. Unfortunately the first few pages which give details of how to treat and what to pay servants are damaged but there are many recipes so if there was anything you were particularly interested in let me know and I shall look it up. The book had previously belonged to a Mrs Garwood, possibly she wore out the pages on servants! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Hello List Pippa, the only large set of records in the India Office Records at the British Library I can see from the catalogue, from the Supreme Court of Calcutta, are in respect of wills and inventories. There seemed to be one or two murder cases, but not from 1819 Have you tried the British Library "Search our Catalogue Archives and Manuscripts", entering your ancestor's name? http://searcharchives.bl.uk/primo_library/libweb/action/search.do?dscnt=0&fr omLogin=true&dstmp=1367715362162&vid=IAMS_VU2&fromLogin=true or http://tinyurl.com/d2nvaqm Cheers Maureen (Sydney) Date: Fri, 3 May 2013 16:00:15 -0400 (EDT) From: ve Pippa <[email protected]> Subject: [INDIA] Supreme Court, Calcutta To: [email protected] I came across an article in the Asiatic Journal about a criminal court case in 1819 which had apparently excited great interest. The criminal looks to be my ancestor who was found guilty just moments after the case closed! Does the British Library India Office Records hold any Court records for the Supreme Court Calcutta? Thanks Pippa

    2. Maureen Evers
    3. Hello List Further to what Liz advised Warren, there was an Anglo-Indian Force raised during the First World War. This is mentioned in the FIBIS Fibiwiki page "First Word War" section "Anglo-Indians" http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=First_World_War#Anglo-Indians or http://tinyurl.com/ccymykr There is a book at the British Library called "The Anglo-Indian Force, 1916" (Allahabad), 1918, reference IOR/L/MIL/17/5/4318, (which is mentioned in the footnotes of the Fibiwiki page) If there is a connection between John Harold ABBOTT and this Force, you would expect it would be mentioned in this book. Cheers Maureen From: "Liz Chater" < [email protected]> Subject: [INDIA] John Harold ABBOTT O.B.E. Date: Sat, 4 May 2013 09:09:59 +0100 I saw your message Warren and did a quick search of The Times newspapers...... The other reference is: The Indian Domiciled Community.. The Times (London, England), Tuesday, Aug 20, 1912; pg. 3; Issue 39982. (1003 words) With the headline "The Indian Domiciled Community. Regiment to be Formed" "....in the present instance Mr. Abbott has taken steps to receive the names of suitable persons willing to recruit and the Government of India now see their way as an experiment to raise an "Anglo-Indian" regiment of 500 men...." I'm sure with further investigation you will find the reason behind him being awarded the O.B.E., but my guess is something to do with the forming and development of the "Anglo-Indian" regiment....

    3. I saw your message Warren and did a quick search of The Times newspapers. Two references come up for J.H. Abbott as follows. Charities, &c.. The Times (London, England), Tuesday, Jul 30, 1907; pg. 16; Issue 38398. (6070 words) This refers to an advertisement he placed: "opportunity for Gentlemen's sons - Farming in India" it says he was considering opening out a new farm in Central Provinces by purchasing and leasing many thousands of acres of cultivated and forest land. He was looking for apprentices. Abbott has taken steps to receive the names of suitable persons willing to recruit and the Government of India now see their way as an experiment to raise an "Anglo-Indian" regiment of 500 men...." I'm sure with further investigation you will find the reason behind him being awarded the O.B.E., but my guess is something to do with the forming and development of the "Anglo-Indian" regiment. Most libraries have access to The Times, and other online newspapers. Best wishes Liz
