    1. [INDIA] Hotels in Dehra Dun etc.
    2. Noel Clark
    3. In answer to Leonie's question. I located a digitised copy of 'Dehra Dun - Past and Present', a guide to Dehra and the Doon district written in 1929 by a Captain O. E. S. Power, and have downloaded it page by page (all 116 pages) and re-compiled it into a single .pdf document of 4.6MB. I've also bookmarked the file as I went through it. Unfortunately some pages were missed in the digitisation procedure, but it does allow us to conclude that were three hotels in the town at that time - the Royal (formerly known as the Northern), the Alexandra and the Gresham. The Victoria is mentioned, but in such a way to strongly suggest that it had closed by 1929. The book is a strange little document; it is deficient in that it has no map, nor a list of European residents. Nevertheless it might be useful to anyone who has an interest in the town. If you have a genuine overwhelming urge to possess a copy of this document, I can send it to you as an e-mail attachment, but please contact me off-list - remember, though, it is 4.6 MB. This offer is open for a limited time only. If anyone from FIBIS administration is interested and reading this, I could burn it on to a CD for the Society and send it to you. Even dress it up a bit with a nice cover! Noel

    3. Hello List Leonie and Noel, the Digital Library of India has some online Thackers for the required period, See the FIBIS Fibiwiki page Directories online, section Thackers Indian Directory http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Directories_online#Thacker.27s_Indian_ Directory or http://tinyurl.com/q567xvl Cheers Maureen Date: Fri, 24 May 2013 20:22:32 +1000 From: "Noel Clark" <[email protected]> Subject: [INDIA] Hotels in Dehra Dun To: <[email protected]> Cc: [email protected] Leonie, I would say the best place to look would be the Mofussil section of the various editions of Thacker's Indian Directory, and look through 'Commercial' for Dehra Dun. In 1895 there was certainly one hotel, the 'Victoria', managed by Walter Francis Trotter; he was also there in 1879. There was also an establishment called 'Theodore's Lodge', proprietor Lalla Munee Ram. These are the only two establishments listed in 1895. I don't know of any other editions of Thacker on-line. There are further editions in the State Library of Victoria (1911, 1917, 1925, 1929, 1933), but they are held offsite and have to be ordered up. Last time I did this I think two editions were missing. See also http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~poyntz/India/directories.html#SOG_au . South Australia is not mentioned. Noel

    3. Hello List Noel, thank you for posting this. I'm sorry I can't give you any information, but until your post I was unaware down load of an entire book was even possible. For the information of other Listers, I did a Google search, which resulted in the http://www.sanskritdocuments.org/scannedbooks website page which gives details of a number of different software programs, the first mentioned of which is DLI Downloader 0.23 which is mentioned in the next link. http://dlidownloader.blogspot.com.au/ The following link gives detailed instructions for a download, based on the DLI Downloader 0.23 program http://techstunted.blogspot.com.au/2013/03/downloading-books-from-digital-li brary.html or http://tinyurl.com/olo83a6 I too wound be interested to know whether anyone has experience of any of the downloads. As was said on the last blog "DLI is an ambitious project. But, over the past couple of years, I've been wondering why anyone would go to the trouble of uploading so many valuable books and not ensure easy access". Cheers Maureen (Sydney) ** Date: Sun, 26 May 2013 11:02:20 +1000 From: "Noel Clark" <[email protected]> Subject: [INDIA] Downloading books from the Digital Library of India Just wondering whether anyone has actually downloaded the 'DLI Downloader' software and then downloaded a book from the Digital Library of India website? So far I have downloaded short books one page at a time, always being reluctant to download software from the net without being sure it's safe. One page at a time is OK for books of, say, 100 pages or so, but not really feasible for longer books. Would appreciate any comments anyone has. Thank you. Noel

Father of Henry Ashley Emile who seems to have fathered all the Ashley-Emiles in India. Where can I find birth records for these years in Bengal? I have used IBIS, FamilySearch, and India Office and come up short trying to go back any further. Unable to find any information on parents of Alfred or Sophia or birthplace in India or UK. Also looking for any information on Redvers Henry Ashley Emile (1899-1976) who called himself RHAE Cavendish or his sister Renee Emile (1917-1942) buried in Lucknow cemetery. Their father Henry Ashley Emile (1845-1916) was supposed to be a judge in India who was murdered in 1916. Unable to confirm this. 2. Maureen Evers
    3. Hello List Marjorie, I have not heard of any researchers. I have heard, probably third or fourth hand, about an organisation called "Your Man In India" which has a document procurement service. I have not used this service, and know nothing further about the company than the website. https://www.yourmaninindia.com/ Perhaps, instead of contacting individual churches as you have mentioned below, you could try contacting the relevant Archdioceses. Of course this may not be successful either. Perhaps phone contact may be a more successful option. The FIBIS Fibiwiki page "Church Records" has links which should enable you to locate Archdioceses for the Church of North India (protestant churches for Bombay), and for the Roman Catholic Archdioceses. http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Church_records Cheers Maureen Date: Sun, 19 May 2013 12:42:55 +0100 (IST) From: MARJORIE GAHAN <[email protected]> Subject: [INDIA] BOMBAY LOOK UPS To: [email protected] Dear List - if the following message feels like deja vous - it's just me persevering in the hunt for my family's history!
