Hello List Melanie, very interesting. Were all the baptisms performed by the same clergyman/chaplain who was on a long trip? Or at least the ones under the heading "BAPTISMS IN COMING UP THE RIVER TO MEERUT"? I imagine in 1816 there were not all that many chaplains around. Just a small comment about the No 3 entry for Kurnaul. I think this would read Harriet Daughter of Matross Gibson Artillery. A Matross is an early name for a Private in the Artillery, and was later on called a Gunner. Hello List Marjorie, thanks for this update. If Church authorities will not allow third parties access to personal b/d/m records this appears to rule out any type of researcher in India being able to look up records. Perhaps this is why there do not appear to be researchers generally available. Maureen recommended some online books that detail (and I mean detail) survey efforts in India. I looked at one (approx 1840 to 1860) Among other things, there is quite a bit of biographical information about people associated with the ongoing surveying. In the front is a table of contents and an index at the rear. Although, online word search is not enabled, the index seems fairly complete. For anyone who has ancestors who might have been involved these volumes are worth investigating. The volume I perused was over 600 pages and it is quite readable. For an Aussie, Maureen deserves credit for sharing this information. Ed (Falcon)

Hello List For anyone who had ancestors who worked for the "Survey of India", the books Historical records of the Survey of India by Reginald Henry Phillimore are now available online, either to read online, and/or download as pdfs. There are five volumes which cover the period to 1861. There is a great deal of biographical information about the men who worked for the Survey of India in the period covered. They have been added to the FIBIS Fibiwiki page Surveyor http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Surveyor which also includes this interesting obituary of the author http://www.himalayanclub.org/journal/obituary-5 or http://tinyurl.com/pk2mbuz Cheers Maureen (Sydney)
My thanks to Maureen and Ed for their emails re above. No luck in finding anything yet but the search goes on. Marion
Hello List Nancy, the FIBIS Fibiwiki page Miscellaneous tips (http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Miscellaneous_tips) has some tips on restoring old photographs, written by James Tanner, (from the Family Search website). Restoring old photographs is not really your problem, but perhaps James Tanner would be willing to give you some advice, or write something further on FamilySearch. I found an email address for him: genealogyarizonaATgmail.com (Substitute the usual @ symbol for AT) He has a blog http://genealogysstar.blogspot.com.au/ If you do find out some information, do update the List. Another alternative, if you are a FIBIS member, is to ask the FIBIS webmaster to upload the image to the Fibiwiki, and then ask List members click on the URL to look at the image on the Fibiwiki to suggest what is written. Some Fibiwiki scans can be enlarged considerably, but I think it depends how the image was scanned in the first place. You could perhaps do the same for FIBIS on Facebook, but I think you can get a greater enlargement on the Fibiwiki Cheers Maureen (Sydney) From: NANCY LILLY < [email protected]> Subject: [INDIA] Clean up of photograph of 1830 Bengal document Date: Tue, 28 May 2013 09:49:16 -0500 This would probably be considered off topic but it does relate to my research in India. Subject: British Indian Army WW2 My brother Bevis Breen joined the York and Lancaster Regiment in India shortly after his 18th birthday ( Oct 19, 1925) in 1943 . After a few weeks of warfare training in the jungles of Mysore he was sent with his unit into active combat into Burma in March 1944 . After 9 months, his unit was reduced to one third even with reinforcements and was sent back to India in Dec 13, 1944. When the war ended in Aug. 1945, his unit was sent from India to Singapore. In July 1947, th e York and Lancaster Regiment returned to Britain and my brother with it wh ere he was demobilized. My brother died last year - Sep 18, 2012 in England. Hello List Hello List Marion, further to my email below, I didn't mention that the British Library files are generally closed for persons who joined the Army after 1937, which would include all who joined during WW2, although you can apply subject to the permission of the person, if still alive, or that person's executor, for persons who have died. I don't know whether these closed files show up in the British Library search or not. Cheers Maureen (Sydney) From: Maureen Evers [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, 28 May 2013 12:04 PM To: '[email protected]' Subject: [INDIA] British Indian Army WW2 Hello List Marion, for the records, there are 3 possible sources set out in the FIBIS Fibiwiki page Indian Army, section Records http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Indian_Army#Records Firstly, there may be records at the British Library in the series called "Indian Army Records of Service" and you can perform an online search by name to see if the one you want is there...
This catalogue entry may be of interest to Listers in Australia. Catalogue details of microfilms at the National Library of Australia, with items from the National Archives of India. "Records, proceedings, notes, files selected for their Australian interest. Some examples include: Passports and visas for immigration into Australia; regarding horses required from Sydney for military purpose in India..." http://trove.nla.gov.au/version/43174468 It indicates that if Listers are looking for passport applications to other countries, the National Archives of India appears to be the Archive which has these records. Cheers Maureen (Sydney)
I am replying to the request from Marion & adding to what Maureen replied. In Google, put "Digital Microfilm" look for the response which is UK National Archives. Scroll down to WO 100, WO 102 and nearby. There are lots of documents that relate to WW2 and soldiers. The advantage is that these are downloadable and free. Ed (from Falcon)
Hello List Marion, for the records, there are 3 possible sources set out in the FIBIS Fibiwiki page Indian Army, section Records http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Indian_Army#Records Firstly, there may be records at the British Library in the series called "Indian Army Records of Service" and you can perform an online search by name to see if the one you want is there. However the actual records are not available online. If there is no record there, you have two choices. You can either try the National Archives of India, or the British Army. (Contact details on the Fibiwiki page). For people who were demobbed in England, perhaps the latter source would be applicable, but this is a "best guess". I understand there is quite a wait to actually receive a record if there is one there (up to 12 months at times) Perhaps others can advise you about the medals.
