Does anyone know of this man --- Benjamin AITKEN? He was born Sattara, which is South of Bombay, 1849, and his father was Rev James Aitkin. In particular has anyone got a photograph of him? He was a Civil Servant and a newspaper editor. He died in 1916 in Bombay. Kind regards, Len Buchanan .
Hello List Further to my email below I have been sent the following link from an Indian website, an article called "Shimla: Manual record-keeping that's eye-popping efficient" dated March 2013, about a brother and sister who obtained copies of the birth registration records of their grandparents from the Shimla Municipal Corporation http://www.daijiworld.com/news/news_disp.asp?n_id=166043 or http://tinyurl.com/mrfss35 So it appears to be possible! Allen’s Indian Mail 1868 BMD’s by Valmay Young Approximately 3,600 birth, marriage and death entries that are mentioned in Allen's Indian Mail 1868 have just been added to the FIBIS database website. Our thanks go to John Gannon and his team.

I know they were both born and died in Calcutta, as I have these dates. I cannot find their wedding information. I've searched Familysearch.org, FIBIS and the Indian Office Records. Their eldest child was born in 1888 in Calcutta. Any suggestions? Lauren Robinson Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hello List Noel, although I have never seen one before, I believe the death register page would be from the birth and death registration records held by the municipal authorities , described in the FIBIS Fibiwiki page "Birth and death registration" http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Birth_and_death_registration In general terms, because these records are held locally, you need to know which registration office is applicable, and the exact date, (although if there aren't many records perhaps the year would be sufficient). Although people in the past have been able to obtain copies of birth registration, I do not know whether it is still possible to do so, or the situation with death entries. You would probably need to use an organisation such as Your Man In India, mentioned recently in another India List post, but whether they can obtain "historical certificates" I do not know. I would think any certificate would be a transcript. For a place like Simla, the man who produced the website may be able to assist. All rather indefinite. Dear Listers, I am desperately seeking information, primarily of the marriage of my grand-parents RICHARD SILVA RONCON and MARIE LEONORA DA SILVA, who married around 1908-9. There is a good chance that it was in Bombay that this marriage took place, and parishes in Byculla,Parel,Dadar,Mahim and Bandra are possibilities. If any of you kind listers, is doing your own search in any of the places mentioned above,in a similar time frame, could I prevail upon you to take a look in the R's and S's, and should you come across these names or any other Roncons or Silva Roncons, I would be so delighted for the information. Thank you. Marjorie <[email protected]>
Just as a follow-up on the question I asked. I had a couple of replies concerning the DLI software download. Neither was complimentary. At this stage therefore I would recommend that people do not attempt to use it. My conclusion is that the DLI site is useful for nothing larger than documents with a small number of pages - say up to 100 or so - which can be downloaded one at a time and then subsequently processed. Larger documents would require either the patience of Job, or a collaborative approach with a number of people dealing with sections of a large book, or both, with someone to assemble the final complete version. To process downloads you will need software that can actually view a .tif file. In my case I have Acrobat Professional (a most useful Christmas present for those planning ahead, and something that I could not live without now) with which I can convert files into .pdf and then assemble into a single document and bookmark etc. That's what I did with 'Dehra Dun, Past and Present.' Some further reading here: http://techstunted.blogspot.com.au/2013/03/downloading-books-from-digital-li brary.html Reading that is enough to put me off even trying to download a large document. Noel
Melanie, Thank you for a great post. Edward Buck in "Simla Past and Present" (1904) mentions four cemeteries in Simla. He doesn't name them, but gives physical and geographical descriptions, and significant graves in them. It would be interesting to try and match them up with the three that you list. A project for a wet day! Going to the web-site you mentioned, I am fascinated by the page of the death register shown there. (It is a death register, not a burial register Does anyone know how a copy of this could be obtained? It is a mine of information not available elsewhere. The pages shown are parts of the years 1886 and 1887. On the left-hand page is an entry for 3rd May for an '...infant of Mr. R. Trotter', a female aged 8 and 1/2 months. That is Rose Trotter, daughter of my great-aunt and uncle. All I need to do now is to decipher the name of their residence (if I can) by searching through my 1901 directory - and it appears to be Dunmurry House! Noel

Looking for death of Claude Ralph Mendies (1887-?) son of Ernest William Mendies (1862-1939) and Effie Ernestine nee Billings (1868-1939 ). Claude married 1. Irene Clarice Dobson (1892-1912) at St James Church Calcutta in 1911 2. Effie Cecelia Scott Mendies (1892-1983), his first cousin, at All Saints Cathedral Allahabad in 1915, by whom he had 5 children. Their address in 1917 was 9 Thornhill Road, Allahabad. Effie re-married in 1931 at Mhow but I have been unable to find any record of Claude's death. Ann Johnston
Information sought on Cecelia Pilkington (1837-1918) daughter of James Pilkington (1774-1840) and an unknown mother. Cecelia married John Charles or Charles John Mendies (1820-1887) at Agra in 1856. Their 3 known children were 1. William Charles Mendies (1857-1907) whose 2nd wife was Sophia Lazarus nee Walk. Name of 1st wife not known. 2. Sophie Isabella Mendies (born 1858) who married her 1st cousin Patrick John Harrington Mendies (born 1854) 3. Information sought on the life and legal career of barrister Horace Edlin Mendies (1845-1925). He was the son of Edward Benjamin Mendies (18822-1895) and his first wife Sophia Constance Wittenbaker (1831-1863) and was educated at Doveton College and Calcutta University. Horace married Ella Louisa Nepos (1867-?) in 1884 in Calcutta but there is believed to be a previous marriage for which I have no details. Ella Louisa Nepos was the daughter of Vincent Nepos and Alice Olivia Bond (1842-1900) and her aunt Philomena Josephine Nepos (bon 1842) was married to Horace's maternal uncle George Wittenbaker (born 1833). Ann Johnston,
Information sought on Rose Regina David John (1847-1926) daughter of a John David John . She was the 2nd wife of Edward Benjamin Mendies (1822-1895). They were married at St James Church Calcutta in 1865 and Rose gave birth to at least 16 children over the next 25 years. I presume that her father was born in Wales or of Welsh descent. Edward Benjamin Mendies was a clerk in the Medical Military Department, Calcutta. His first wife was Sophia Constance Wittenbaker or Witten Baker (1831-1863) by whom he had at least 8 children.
