I wonder if anyone on the List might be able to help me with twoproblems that seem to have blocked me? 1. I have been looking for the parents of my ggfather, Michael Henry Cornelius b. 1848. I have found on LDS a Michael Cornelius who was married to a Mary Ann whodied in 1850 [Film: 498988]. And on the fibis site in Allen's Indian Mail - marriages for 1845: "Cornelius, M.J.H. to Maryann, relict of Mr Thos Lewis, at Calcutta". Is there anyway that I can find what the "M.J.H." might stand for and whether they were related to my Michael Henry? And which Cornelius family were they related to in Calcutta? If the "J" were for "Julius" I would be more certain! The second question relates to a damaged photograph which I think might be another ancestor, TW Skinner, who was a conductor in the Madras Artillery. The picture is of a man in a winged collar with a cap or kepi, seemingly with a fur band, a central piece that goes towards the top with a metal button in front, and to the left of the band is an oval embossed badge of sorts. I don't know whther a military man would have worn a white winged collar. Would anyone know what sort of headgear would have been worn by anon-commissioned officer in the Madras Artillery? Thank you, David Cornelius

They had a son Keith (?) who apparently came to England to study medicine. Do you have any information on any of them please? Ian, You may be interested in the following. http://maltaramc.com/regmltgar/sellstromr/2nd10th.jpg This page shows the movements of the 2nd Battalion from 1859. Shows the 2nd Battalion arriving in Madras on 24th February 1865, and returning from Burma on 7th January 1873, arriving Portsmouth 19th February 1873. I then checked some other material I am compiling, and found that by 10th April 1869 the battalion was at Bangalore, but thereafter they are not listed as being in India. Indicating, perhaps, that they were by 1870 they were in Burma. I confirmed this to be so from the 1871 Army List, which shows that they had moved from Madras to Rangoon. The next year they are shown in Rangoon, and in 1873 on passage home. Theres also here a reference to the Andaman Islands http://boards.ancestrylibrary.com/thread.aspx?mv=flat&m=1983&p=topics.Milita ry.uk.britarmy On FindMyPast I found two births that may be of interest, on the GRO Regimental Birth Indices. In both cases these are listed for the 10th foot. Maud M. Gillingham in 1872 in Rangoon, and Victoria E. Gillingham in 1874 "at sea." Alfred H. Gillingham is also shown there. These are the only three Gillingham births for the 10th Foot. These two girls are shown in the 1881 census at an orphanage in Prittlewell, Essex, as "orphans." If they were Robert's children then he must have been dead by then. I have found Victoria in both 1891 and 1901, Maud in 1901. It might be necessary for you to follow the muster rolls to find out what happened to Robert Gillingham. This would require research at The National Archives London. Best wishes, Noel [email protected]

The Vallis family has a family burial plot at St. John's Cemetery in Sealdah, but I do have marriage and baptismal records from the Church of St. Thomas, Church of the Sacred Heart and St. Ignaitius. I really like your suggestion of a personal visit, but since I am in the United States, I am sorry to say a trip of that expense in not in the budget. However, I will try the email route first and proceed from there. Thank you again for your suggestions. Lauren Robinson Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hi Everyone As much as I can try I cannot find any birth records for Thomas Lynn. Fibis has a record which says he died in 1867 and states his age, so I can tell he was born 1811. Fibis also has his sons death records which says his father name also his grandfathers name. So I have gathered info of Thomas Lynn born 1811 died 1867 father Charles Seymour Lynn But I cannot find any records of his birth which may have been Madras or UK (proberly London) this is a crucial part of my records and ties everything up. Any help would gratefully received. Sue

Ian, There were (at least) two other children. Agnes Louisa Gillingham, baptised 27 Jul 1869 at Trimulgherry; Edith Gillingham, born 1 Nov 1870, baptised 20 Nov 1870 at Trimulgherry. It would be worth obtaining the baptism records for these children. Robert's father was an Albert Gillingham. The Worldwide Army Index 1861 on FindMyPast does have a Robert Gillingham, Corporal 274, with the 1st Battalion, 10th Foot at Aldershot. This might be your man? However, I cannot find any "discharge to pension" papers for him. On this site http://www.soldiersofthequeen.com/India-WilliamHenryWherry.html you can see the movements of a fellow sergeant in the 10th. The 2nd Battalion appears to have left India in 1873 and returned home. As far as I know they were on garrison duties there, and not involved in any fighting. Therefore no medals. Noel

The place name is transcribed as Moorgheliatta and Moorgheethutta, but the spelling was then Moorgheehatta and currently Murghihata. This is a location in Calcutta, where there is the Roman Catholic Cathedral of The Most Holy Rosary. You may wish to obtain a copy of the death certificates to confirm this is where the burial services took place. The chances the couple were married in the same church. As you have advised you have tried FamilySearch , FIBIS and the British Library India Office Records. you could try contacting the church in Calcutta, perhaps the Archbishop's Office to see if it is possible to obtain a copy of a probable marriage record. http://www.archdioceseofcalcutta.in/contact.html If you are unsuccessful by email, perhaps you could try telephoning. Some people have found a personal visit is necessary to obtain a copy of a record. Cheers Maureen (another Maureen) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I was out in Dehra Dun and Mussoorie last year. The Agency Hotel (also called The Chapman Hotel) is no longer there and I believe the building has been demolished. Certainly when we drove down the Rajput Road I couldn't see anything that looked remotely like an hotel. It was however, still in existance run by Mrs Chapman in 1931 as my great grandmother was living there. Your postcard attachment is most interesting. I have been researching my 4 times Great Grandfather Colour Sergeant Robert Gillingham of the 2nd Battalion 10th Regiment of Foot and have the following confirmed information. On 7th February 1867 the said Robert Gillingham (aged 35 years) married a Cathering Keoling (aged 15) and each gave their residence as Bangalore [ IOR Z/N/2 vol 48 Folio 62 ]. Robert’s Rank is given as ++ Serj 2/10 regt { ++ as the record I have is obscured }. Almost a year later the couple registered the birth on the 14th January 1868 of Alfred Henry Gillingham (Roberts rank given as Cr Serjt) where the place of birth is given as Trimelgherry. The birth certificate also gives the following army staff information. Name of the Chaplin is given as J M Bachero RCP. The signature of the Adjutant is given as George Hood Lieut & Adjutant 1/10th Foot. I hope this is useful information and also that it might prompt some replies that will add to my information.
