    1. [INDIA] (no subject)
    2. I came across a very interesting account of the great Masulipatam storm of 1864. This was in "A manual of the Kistna district in the presidency of Madras" By Gordon Mackenzie (Pages 118-129) that I found whilst searching on Google Books.   My Great Great Grandfather was "old Mr Ottman" who left the Fort to look for his daughter, Charlotte Louisa, who had only married a week previously to Scott (Manager of the Engineer’s office).   I do not know much about them, but Charlotte had previously married a Joseph Fruvall (Furval) who then died. She then re-married (Possibly William) Scott and they were both killed in the storm as per the account a week or two after their wedding.   Does anyone know much about this and anything about who Mr Scott was?   Regards   Mark

    1. [INDIA] New book - Malabar Christian Memorials 1737-1996
    2. Liz Wilde
    3. Dear Listers, I thought some of you might be interested in the following book which I am about to order. I received the information on it from a genealogy connection in India & the relevant section of his email is copied below. Liz Wilde Coreglia Antelminelli Italia Malabar: Christian Memorials 1737-1996, published recently. It deals with Christian memorials and burials in the towns of Kannur (Cannanore), Tellicherry and Mahe in Malabar--mainly English and French burials plus a few Portuguese and Dutch. In case you would like to acquire a copy, do let me know. It is part of the research /conservation works done by SIRA (South India Research associates), a voluntary network for retrieval/recording of south India's European heritage. The South India Research Associates (SIRA) is a voluntary network of scholars and researchers on south Indian heritage and we work with our own resources and the sale of our books. We print only 250 copies, and make direct person to person sales-- hence my keen interest not to lose even one individual who may want to buy a copy-- we need to raise money to publish our next book, on Nilgiris. By the way, see a note from a US genealogist on our book here: http://ancestraldiscoveries.blogspot.in/2013/02/european-christian-burials-in-malabar.html Best regards Chekkutty for SIRA, Calicut. Additionally, the National Archives has a list of researchers on its website, http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/irlist/, some of whom also do research at the British Library. One of these is Bob O'Hara http://www.searcher-na.co.uk/. Author: maureenr5 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.asia.india.general/2817.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Glen, There is a file in the "Indian Army Records of Service" at the British Library .Title: Powis, Harry Baden .Collection Area: India Office Records and Private Papers .Reference: IOR/L/MIL/14/60214 .Contents: oHighest Rank: A/Cpt oRegiment: S T C ; Indian Army Reserve of Officers ; oDate of commission: (1919) For details of obtaining a copy, see the FIBIS Fibiwiki page British Library http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=British_Library#Obtaining_Copies_of_Records Also see the FIBIS Fibiwiki page Police http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Police The IOR/V12 records at the British Library would probably have some good information, but this would require a researcher if you are unable to visit. (FIBIS has a volunteer service for members). Following through on the FIBIS database link on the Police page, there is the following record http://search.fibis.org/frontis/bin/aps_detail.php?id=1233514 In respect of Civil Lists, the British Library does not appear to hold any for Baluchistan, so I suspect there were none. Looking at the FIBIS Fibiwiki page Directories online http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Directories_online, the most relevant for the period you are interested in are possibly some editions under the headings "India List and India Office List" and "Thacker's Indian Directory", all from the Digital Library of India website. The Thacker's entries, if they appear, could be in at least two places. Firstly in the Mofussil section under the town names eg Zhob and Loralai, and secondly in the Alphabetical List of Residents. Note however the 1934 Moffusil Directory ends at Yercaud, so does not include Zhob. There could possibly be some entry under Baluchistan, however you would need to look at the Contents page. The Digital Library of India website has books you can't find elsewhere but is can be extremely slow process to locate what you are looking for. Author: glenhodgins Surnames: Powis Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.asia.india.general/2817/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I'm currently researching *Harry Baden POWIS*, born c.1880 in Umbala (Ambala), India. I'm still piecing together his history, but it appears he: a) joined the Punjab Police prior to the Great War; b) served in the Indian Supply and Transport Corps (S&TC) during the Great War and the Third Afghan War; c) transferred to the Baluchistan Police sometime during the inter-war period (my gut instinct tells me this transfer would have occurred in the early-to-mid 1920s); d) retired from the police in the late 1930s (I think c.1937/38); moving to the Channel Islands. I was hoping I might be able to trace a bit of his police career via the various Civil Lists available on-line through the Indian Digital Library site, but I can't seem to find any Baluchistan or Punjab Civil lists. I'm quite certain Punjab produced provincial civil lists, but what about Baluchistan? Was Baluchistan a province? Did it produce a civil list? Of course, grateful for any assistance with respect to mapping out Powis's career with the Indian Police Service. PS: I found that Powis was awarded the King George V Silver Jubilee Medal in 1935 as: "Superintendent of Police for Zhob and Loralai, Baluchistan".
