    1. [INDIA] Thomas AUSTIN d. 24 Sep 1957
    2. Glenys Savage
    3. Hi I have searched for a long time for the Death Certificate on my Grandfather-in-law Thomas AUSTIN and with the search facility in recent emails, searched again to no avail. I have his birth date as 24 Oct 1876 and death on 24 Sep 1957. Sadly I’m not sure of where, but suggest Khanapore. His children lived their early years in Madras State. Any assistance would be welcomed. Thank You. Glenys

Re Chenai Births and Deaths Registration Hi Maureen, I tried to track my husband's Birth reg. and was delighted to find it registered! However, when I went into it and checked, his parents names are down as CEK JAYLOR and JM JAYLOR instead of TAYLOR. All other information on the entry is correct, so I know it was the right one! You are able to print it off, which indeed I did, however, it is worthless to us. It would have been priceless, as he has always been given to understand that the registers has been destroyed in a fire, and he has had to use his Baptism certificate as proof of age and parentage. It is free to access and download, so in theory one should be able to enter any name and date of birth and check. I initially just put in the date of birth, as most babies (indeed mine were too) just registered with the parents names and not the name of the child. Regards Rosemary

Usually these records have some reference to wives and children, so you might find something there, if this is your man. I could not find any reference in the British Army Overeas Chaplains' Returns, or in the India records on Family Search If Martha was born in India, and the marriage took place in India, there is perhaps a possibility she did not die but remained in India when her husband returned to England. 3. Hello List Sue, the Wikipedia article “History of the rupee” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_rupee quotes one rupee equal to 23 ⅛ pence in 1871. My impression is that up until that time one rupee was equal to two shillings, or ten rupees to the pound. 3. Hello List I was recently sent an email which included the following link from the website of the Chennai Corporation called "Online facility for verification or printing of birth & death certificate". This relates to Madras birth and death registration from 1930 and you need to know the date of birth or death. http://www.chennaicorporation.gov.in/online-civic-services/birthanddeath.htm or http://tinyurl.com/6yxc2cr The Chennai (previously Madras) Corporation is one of the Municipal Corporations in India which hold civil birth and death registration records. Birth and death registration is described in the FIBIS Fibiwiki page of that name, and the above link has been included. http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Birth_and_death_registration or http://tinyurl.com/6yjrbqf If anyone has an ancestor who was born or died in Madras from 1930 onwards, where the date of birth/ death is already known, please let the List know if this website is helpful to you, and what information is to be found on the certificate. 3. > Can someone tell me how much in ?'s would 22,500 rupees be in 1865. > Thanks > Sue It would be worth £2,250. An earlier posting (2004) by Peter Rogers to the list reads: The exchange rate for the Rupee/Pound was at about 10 Rupees to the British Pound for most of the 19th.Cent. In 1899 the rate was changed to 15 Rupees to the Pound. Regards, Michael

Born in the parish of Kilmore in Tipperary, he enlisted at Limerick at the age of 24 in 1847 and shipped to Madras on the "Elizabeth" in 1848. He married 15 year-old Elizabeth LYONS in 1860. She died not long after the birth of their daughter, Bridget, my g-grandmother. Her father, Daniel LYONS was also a member of the Madras Artillery. Timothy was discharged in 1867 and indicated that he intended to return to Kilmore at the end of his service at Woolwich. Posted in the hope that any of these might appear in someone's records. I came across a very interesting account of the great Masulipatam storm of 1864. This was in "A manual of the Kistna district in the presidency of Madras" By Gordon Mackenzie (Pages 118-129) that I found whilst searching on Google Books. ? My Great Great Grandfather was "old Mr Ottman" who left the Fort to look for his daughter, Charlotte Louisa, who had only married a week previously to Scott (Manager of the Engineer?s office). ? I do not know much about them, but Charlotte had previously married a Joseph Fruvall (Furval) who then died. She then re-married (Possibly William) Scott and they were both killed in the storm as per the account a week or two after their wedding. ? Does anyone know much about this and anything about who Mr Scott was? ? Regards ? Mark
