    1. [INDIA] India to Uganda
    2. Noel Clark
    3. A branch of one of one of my families of interest - the Talbots - left India about 1914/15 and was settled in Uganda by 1916, first in Kekonde and then Mityana, where Frederic(k) George Talbot introduced the growing of tea and became known as the "Father of the Ugandan Tea Industry." Other than very limited references I have been unable to make any substantial further progress on this family. So far I have found no BMD information for Uganda, and the Rootsweb Uganda list seems moribund with just one or two posts per year. Does anyone else have anyone who moved to East Africa in general and Uganda in particular? If so I would be grateful if you would contact me off-list. Thank you.

    3. In "Thacker's Indian Directory 1895" there is listed :- "Adcock, H.S., p.w.inspr., I.M.Rly., Dattia." He is listed under the Engineering Dept, of the Indian Midland Railway with Headquarters at Jhansi and p.w.inspr. probably is a permanent way inspector. There are 54 Marshalls listed in this Directory also. brinds

Madras Fusiliers. Have you checked this website http://www.mcskimming.org.uk/dsilva/WilliamSimmondsSnr.html Under the transcripts tab there are the records we have found in the British Library. I have always assumed that Elizabeth was an Indian lady and probably untraceable. I have looked for her in the British Library and not found any records relating to her - birth, marriage or death. I assume from the term - "particular friend" as she is referred to in the will that she and William were never married. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [INDIA] Adcock/Marshall
    2. hazel
    3. Hello from Hazel in NZ. Yet another adjustment to the info I’m seeking!!! The search for Gordon Adcock with the possible maiden name of his mother being Marshall, I have had it confirmed that his birth date was 1910 and not 1920 as I was led to believe. this could alter things somewhat! Information found about Gordon Adcock re his marriage and children has confirmed that he was born in 1910 in Bareilly, Calcutta, India. So it’s His parents I am seeking! Do the names ADCOCK [his father] and MARSHALL[ his mother] give me the answer? These could have been in the military or were in India for commerce? What were they doing in India? This info will open up his father’s family line. Many thanks. Hazel in NZ.

James Hicky was the founder and editor of the paper, which lasted for two years. Other than at the British Library or National Library of India. Does anyone know if any of his private correspondence exists? I am very keen for information as The Bengal Gazette is the focus of my Fulbright research project. Author: VincentCollins12 Surnames: Edwards Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.asia.india.general/2829/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am sending this note to as many Anglo Indian contacts as I can find. I hope you can help. I am trying to trace the Anglo-Indian part of my family, of which I am very proud. They were living in and around Madras at the start of the 20th century. The details I have are as follows: Martin EDWARDS married ??, children: 1.Grace Lillian Edwards (my grandmother) born July 15 1906 in Madras. I have photos of her. 2.James Edwards (was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Army Medical Corps in WW2. He was a surgeon.) I have his photo. 3.Not sure if there were others. Family story is that Grace was former head girl of Madras University or a girls' college - not sure if that was the case. She definitely had a brother, James who was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Army Medical Corps in WW2. He was a surgeon. I believe that the Edwards were an Anglo-Indian family. Grace Lillian EDWARDS (born July 15 1906 in Madras) married Joseph Collins in Trinity Chapel, Park Town, Madras on February 28 1927. Joseph was serving with 2nd Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers, stationed in Calicut. Children: 1.James Joseph Edwards Collins (born in Fort St George Madras on April 29, 1927. He died in Bolton, Lancashire on April 30, 2003.) He was my father. 2.Phyllis Elaine Collins (born in Wellington, India on April 27, 1929.) 3.Other children were born subsequently in the UK. Anything you can add would be much appreciated. Thanks. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Hello List There is now a UK Government search facility "Find a soldier's will" which says "Search for the will of a soldier who died while serving in the British armed forces between 1850 and 1986". https://www.gov.uk/probate-search#before-you-start There is no further information given but from information given at the time this project was announced, it appears it relates to 300,000 wills of soldiers killed in action from the Crimea period onwards, which were "wills completed by soldiers in their paybooks". The data does not include officers' wills. Cheers Maureen (Sydney)

Author: railtond Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.asia.india.general/2827.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Kevin has ancestors in Kolar Gold Fields and has a marriage record from 1903. he asks if anyone has gone down this route before. I have, but with only partial success. There are 2 main sources of church records from India: The British Library and whatever remains in churches in India. The British Library has copies of all the church records that were copied to the India Office in London. Estimates of the proportion this represents of all church registers there ever were varies but it is certainly far from 100%. The British Library records can be viewed in 3 ways. By visiting the British Library, by viewing the microfilm copies of the BL records held by the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints (they are available to non church members) or by viewing the BL records on FindMyPast when they become available (FindMyPast are supposed to have put them on-line but there have been a number of delays). Writing to churches in India requesting information from their records rarely produces a result. Most records have probably now decayed as a result of dampness and ants and for what remains church officials seem disinclined to reply to requests. I have obtained some information on baptisms, marriages and burials from the microfilm copies held by CJCLDS but by no means all I know there should be. I am waiting for FindMyPast in the hope that I find something I have missed. My attempts to make contact with what I understand is the last remaining catholic church in Kolar Gold Fields has not been answered. I have also employed someone to view the records for me without any better success. I would summarise by saying that all we can do is hope that FindMyPast do bring these records on-line. If we don't find what we are looking for when they do the chances of finding missing records elsewhere is very slight. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
