Hello List Hilary, if he was still in the British Army in 1921,(he appears to be still in the Army in 1920) his service record would be with the Ministry of Defence As he was born pre 1901, there is a finding aid which will tell you whether the Ministry of Defence holds his records. Read about it in the FIBIS Fibbiwiki page British Army, section Records,Army personnel serving after January 1921 http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php/British_Army#Army_personnel_serving_after_January_1921 or http://tinyurl.com/ktrwbx3 If his name is listed as being with the MOD, you can then apply to the MOD for a record. I have been working on some HALL ancestors; specifically Augusta Matilda who married Henry Chapman in Madras in 1810. She is peripherally related, but it would be interesting to hear from others who are working on the same family. I have not found out anything else about her family. I believe because they were RC there are few records kept at the B/L; my thinking was perhaps the social club (which I have sent an email to and not received a response some weeks back) may have archived records to other family members that may also have belonged to it, namely our Great Grandfather - the search continues... 1895 Thacker's for Nagpur shows just the Mayo Hospital. House Surgeon: Asst. Surgeon Nitya Lall Bysack Assts: Radhika P. Banerjee, Girma Zingoo and S imati Lakhi (there is a letter missing between the "S" and the "i"). The Civil Surgeon in Nagpur was Surgeon-Major G.F.A. Harris (on furlough) and the Surgeon-lt.-col. H.K. Mackay offg. (presumably "officiating"). The latter gentleman was the Superintendent of the Lunatic Asylum. The above are the only entries under "Medical."

A Google search reveals a photograph such as that described on the Christie’s website, sold in 2001 for £705 (http://www.christies.com/lotfinder/LotDetailsPrintable.aspx?intObjectID=2534764); and a number of colour photographs, apparently of the hospital.
With his permission I am forwarding some information/correction provided by a Chelsea Pensioner regarding the Madras Engineer Group. It was wrongly described as "Madras engineers" in a West Briton marriage announcement that appeared on the CORNISH-GEN List and which I forwarded to the INDIA List. Tom Thompson, St Agnes. ---0--- May I take the liberty of a very small correction, supplemented by some additional information: Madras Engineer Group (MEG), informally known as the Madras Sappers, is an engineer group of the Corps of Engineers <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Army_Corps_of_Engineers> of the Indian Army<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Army>. The Madras Sappers draw their origin from the erstwhile Madras Presidency army <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madras_Army> of the British Raj <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Raj>. This regiment has its HQ in Bengaluru<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bengaluru>. The Madras Sappers are the oldest of the three groups of the Corps of Engineers. The Madras Sappers were the only regiment of the Madras Presidency Army<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madras_Army> to survive unscathed the extensive reorganisations that took place between 1862 and 1928.[1] <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madras_Engineer_Group#cite_note-Mason-1> The thambis, as the troops of the Madras Sappers are popularly known, with their hallmark Shakos<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shako> have distinguished themselves in many battlefields around the world for more than 200 years ---0---
Hello List Harshawardhan, I think it is very likely the Lady Dufferin Hospital has been incorporated into the Mayo Hospital "The medical institutions comprise the Mayo and Dufferin Hospitals for males and females respectively…. The doctors may have been associated with the Mayo Hospital. The closest online edition appears to be for 1897, however sometimes people stayed in their jobs for many years. See the FIBIS Fibiwiki page Directories online http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php/Directories_online#Thacker.27s_Indian_Directory or http://tinyurl.com/k2vdu6x Cheers Maureen On 21/02/2015, at 4:57 AM, Harshawardhan_Bosham Nimkhedkar via <india@rootsweb.com> wrote: > > Somebody recently sent me the scan of an image dated > 1888 taken at the time of the opening of the Lady > Dufferin Hospital for Women in Nagpur (Central India). > It shows a European man (could be the in-charge doctor) > along with an Indian man (may be one of the two native > philanthropists who had donated large sums of money for > the hospital) and a group of Indian women who I presume > were the midwives/nurses working there. Lady Dufferin Hospital is still where it always has been Saddar Town, Karachi, Pakistan My Granny was a midwife there between 1925 and 1934. I still have her handwritten birth record books.
