He attested on 28 Oct 1864 at Chelmsford. He was 5' 9" tall with dark hair and eyes and a dark complexion! Had some periods of desertion for which he was tried and rank forfeited. But eventually restored/promoted to former rank and pay. Promoted to Sergeant 1 Apr 1875; episodes of drunkenness later, He continued to serve at least up to 1890. Discharged 30 Dec 1890. His first service took him to Canada in 1865, back in England 1869, then left for India 2 Nov 1876. So he could have married Ann in any of those countries. Children are listed, and as the eldest seems to be Emma b. 5 Nov 1878, he probably did marry in India, but possibly in England. Have attached a page from service record which includes movement and family summary info. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. He marries a lady by the name of Annie who sadly dies in childbirth on 26 December 1880 in India. Arthur goes on to marry Catherine Rogers on 14 June 1881 in Sanawar. Arthur is back in England with Catherine and their children by 1901. I am trying to trace Arthur's marriage to Annie. Sadly I don't have her surname. When Annie passes she is given as being 29 years old so I guess her birth year is about 1851. I would presume born in India. Does anyone please have a way of trying to trace their marriage? Arthur and Annie's first child is born in 1878 in Agra. Arthur is shown on his second marriage cert as being a Sergeant in the 4th/60th Rifles. Apart from looking for his marriage to Annie can anyone please tell me if there is somewhere I can find Arthur's military record too? Arthur's surname is sometimes spelt with an e on the end. Anyone help would be greatly appreciated. Kind regards Kathryn Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I could find nothing about Hovern. However, the 1839 edition of the Madras Almanac has J. H., Basil, and Thomas Wilkins listed. The last two, both from St Thome' seem to have similar employment. Perhaps they are brothers or father and son. they are in the list of inhabitants, page 192. The name of my own relative is misspelled in this publications, so perhaps there are other mentions of them. Hello list, I have a photograph of Lionel Valentine TURNER and his wife Margaret Kathleen (at their marriage she was SMITH) and their daughter Florence Amelia. Others is the photograph are said to be related to them. The surnames are PORTER, TAYLOR, and COPELAND. The photograph was taken in Belgaum 1916. I am hoping someone out there knows of them and maybe knows where the connection is. Len Buchanan kwljb at xtra.co.nz

An aunt (no longer alive) told me that she was a nurse and that she had an address in Earls Court when she died. My Irene D'Silva was married to Norman Shortland and had 3 children - Joseph, Audrey and Richard. My father was Richard and so Irene was my grandmother.
