An excellent question. My ancestors, Timothy & Martha M. (Swords) Caldwell along with daughter & son-in-law William Rodarmer, made the move from Wayne County Ohio to DeKalb County Indiana about 1855. Sure would like to know the reason for the migration. Norman C. Caldwell, P.S. While researching a couple of "brick walls" back in Stark Co., OH I came across the connection to De Kalb Co., IN. I haven't come across the two surnames that I am researching ( MOORE, MOHR, HAAK, HOUK, HOUCH, HOUCK) but i have come across families that were their neighbors. Is their any printed info on this migration? Is this the time when the land in De Kalb was first put up for public sale? Why did they leave Ohio and did they include my ancestors? > > > ==== INDEKALB Mailing List ==== > Please visit us at the DeKalb County, IN GenWeb Project > http://www.rootsweb.com/~indekalb/index.html >
Surnames: SMITH Likewise. I am looking for my great grandfather's sister (who moved with her new husband Galen BILLINGS from Sandusky Co., OH to LaPorte Co. IN in 1848/9), an elder brother (Harrison SMITH) who went to DeKalb Co. possibly immediately after the Civil War, and the eldest brother (Andrew SMITH) who seems to have migrated to DeKalb Co. from Sandusky County, OH between 1852 (when I know he was in OH) and 1860 when I find him in the census in DeKalb Co. He would have taken my orphaned great grandfather (Charles Theodore SMITH b 1840) with him. There are a number of other possible SMITH siblings I can't find who may also have ended up in DeKalb County from Sandusky Co. OH between 1845 or so and 1852. The SMITH family passed through Wayne Co., OH in about the mid 1820s (one son was born there in 1823). The family originated in New York (the eldest three children at least were born in New York) and a branch of the family remained in Sandusky Co. OH.
