My Joseph KOCH ancestor and his two brother's came to DeKalb Co. in the 1850's because of the availability of cheap land. Johan Ulrich Koch, the emigrant, bought land for Joseph before the latter was of age, then sold it to him when he became 21. Older brothers Simon & Gottlieb also bought land here in the same era. The emigrant never moved from Ohio himself.

It can be traced back to Westmoreland County, PA which is where my brick wall lies. I can match a male descendant of Herman Lewis to my DNA by at least 25 out of 25 markers from the http://www.smgf.org/ database. Based on location and Y-DNA, I am certain that Jonathan is related to me. As far as I can tell, my ancestors were from Ireland/England/Scotland. This is based on the hundreds of DNA matches with other surnames hundreds of years back. Not sure what evidence there is of Jonathan being from Germany. If you know of a male Lewis descendant, I would be happy to sponsor him for the http://LewisSurnameDNAProject.com I am test participant 39432 under Group 10.

My great great grandmother's sister Elizabeth Good Goodwin and her husband Samuel Goodwin along with members of his family migrated to DeKalb County in 1854 from Ashland County in Ohio. This portion of Ashland County was previously part of Wayne County prior to the formation of Ashland County. Elizabeth prior to her marriage to Samuel Goodwin in 1843 lived with her parents and Siblings in Liberty Township in Seneca County. Liberty Township borders Sandusky County. It is not known how the marriage of Elizabeth and Samuel came about as one was living in Seneca County and the other in Ashland. Kind of a strange coincidence. And I am also curious what made them decide to move to DeKalb. Samuel's family originated from Pennsylvania, while Elizabeth's family was from Virginia. An excellent question. My ancestors, Timothy & Martha M. (Swords) Caldwell along with daughter & son-in-law William Rodarmer, made the move from Wayne County Ohio to DeKalb County Indiana about 1855. Mike, I can attest to the fact that both James and George served in the 44th Indiana during the civil war. James claims birth in England and George in Bradford Co., PA; both were shoemakers. (Although James originally gave his age at 45, he was actually 55 and was discharged from Louisville Barraacks for partial paralysis of right arm and old age--then listed as 52 on June 24, 1862. Both are buried at Butler Cemetery. He filed Invalid Pension #198071 and George filed #189171 (Nancy A. filed Widow's Pension #192414 May 14, 1879 and Nancy A. Rummerl, guardian, filed Minor's Pension #204076 Sept. 3, 1882) in case you want to obtain their pension records. Hi Peg, First, let me thank you for the swift reply to my query. Yes, both John Haines and his wife, Amelia Snyder Haines came from Snyder and Union Co. PA areas. Some say they also lived for a time in Juniata Co. With the boundary changes, that could be why there seems to be records for them in all three counties. John and Amelia were married in PA and their first child was born there. There was a Robert, Samuel, Jacob and George Haines who also immigrated to Noble Co., IN from PA. Did any of your Haines families also go to Ohio and IN? Thanks again for taking the time to answer my query.
