Hello, I have copies of quite a few pages from DeKalb County marriage records, starting about 1842. If you'd like to e-mail me names and approximate dates I'll take a look to see if I have anything. I need to leave for work pretty soon, but can check tonight. If I don't happen to have anything in the copies I have, I can check the records for you on my next trip to the Allen County Public Library. Sue Sablic Indiana [email protected]
Sue... I was reading DeKalb county mail and seen this inquiry and if you have any source to marriages there I am very much interested in the marriage of Richard D. DIRRIM to Alice F. WILKINS. It would have been about 1869!! Can you help?? Thanks, Bob Garvey [email protected]
Hi! When do the records for DeKalb Co. marriage licenses begin? How complete are they? Is there someone that would or could do a look up? I have the date and names of the marriage. Thanks. Nancy
Nancy, The marriage records for Dekalb County (early) have been reconstructed after a fire. In some cases only the last names where remaining. In some cases only the Apps, where remaing with no returns. What surnames are you researching? Sue

Hello all, Was wondering if anyone had knowledge of the Lumm family/families of Garrett and/or Auburn. Henry Lumm (my Great grandfather), Michael Lumm, Charles Lumm, Conrad Lumm, Albert Lumm and John Lumm were all having children in DeKalb county right about the same time frame (1885-1913). The rare last name, the small town in Indiana, and with the naming trends I'm seeing my guess is that they were all brothers. Henry named a son Conrad, and one Albert. Plus my mom said she thinks Henry came as a child, or at least rather young, from Kassel Germany pointing towards a family coming (His parents were John Lumm and Marthan Leowes? hard to read her last name in DeKalbs record book.) Henry's wife was also from the same town (Kassel) in Germany but she only met him after she was in Auburn. Her name was Martha Ann Bassie/Bassa/Bessie (spelled 3 ways in DeKalbs records) daughter of Conrad Bessie. Does anyone have ANY information on this family more than I have?? Also Looking for the family of John Moore and Julia DeVore...together they had a son James Albert Moore b. 3/2/1872 in Butler IN...I already know there is info on a John Moore and J. A. Moore in the history of DeKalb county but I dont know if theyre the same people as mine. Here its the opposite...instead of a rare name I have one thats almost too common to track. By the way, James Albert Moore married Mary Elizabeth Lumm (d/o Henry)...these were my great grandparents. Again any info on any of the people mentioned would be greatly appreciated. In a message dated 98-07-24 15:18:47 EDT, you write: << Can anyone give me directions to the Alton Cemetery in DeKalb County? I am very familiar with the area, and I would probably be going to the cemetery from Auburn. >> Hi, Debbie ... Just in case no one has answered your question yet ... Alton Cemetery is located on Hwy 101 between Co Rd 56A and Co Rd 60. As you head south on 101 (from Hwy 8) it is located on the left (east) side of 101. My husband and I were just there last week and it is very nicely kept. Hope you find the person(s) you are looking for. Sue Sablic [email protected]
Hi Everyone! Can anyone give me directions to the Alton Cemetery in DeKalb County? I am very familiar with the area, and I would probably be going to the cemetery from Auburn. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Yours in Christ, Debbie
Thank you to all who responded to me personally to my email. I am new to list & this is my first post. I have been searching for my grandparents ,whom i never knew & have met many deadends. I was told he had the same given name of my father BENJAMIN HARRIS b 17apr1893 in DEKALB CTY ,IN. I understand records there were destroyed or not available before 1910 (birth records). My grandfather ,a BENJAMIN HARRIS was married to a MARTHA??? No where in any records from areas where they lived in MI/IN/OH have i found a BENJAMIN HARRIS with a spouse named MARTHA. Not until at a library near chapel hill,nc where some family search tapes from an LDS were shown to me. According to the info viewed ,there was a BENJAMIN HARRIS b 1857 in RANDOLPH COUNTY,IN(union city). My grandfather died at 83 years of age in 1940. Also a MARTHA REEVES b 1861 in RANDOLPH COUNTY,IN. They married in 1878 in Randolph county. In my fathers family he was the youngest of 5 children. The oldest was born around 1880-82. The timeframe is very close & i am hoping it is my grandparents that i have found. heres hoping to hear from from all. REGARDS, RHarris Charlotte, NC [email protected]

Can anyone give me information on "Normal Schools" in your area? These were where teachers were trained. I need to know where the records are kept and how to have them searched for my grandmother's attendance records. Thank you, Darlene
I have just subscribed to the DeKalb list and I am also interested in the SMITH discussion. One of my ancestors, Francis (Frank) BEUCHAT, was married to a Mary SMITH. Her birth as listed on the 1900 census as 1825 in Pennsylvania. They had three children: William Henry Beuchat who married Sophronia TROUPE on September 25, 1884 in Fairfield twp. in DeKalb Co. ; Lois Mary Beuchat FOSTER who married Lewis FOSTER and they had taken over the farm of Frank and Mary; third child is unknown ( probably a female.) Wm Henry and Sophronia had 5 children: Wilbur Eli who was born July 18, 1885 in Wayne Twp, Noble Co. died Nov. 2, 1912 in Fairfield Twp. ; Mable Issola May Beuchat born Jan 14, 1887 in Wayne Twp; married Lamont Joseph LIKES May 20, 1910 and had 5 children. I am very interested in locating a descendant of the LIKES line. Anyone out there who knows anything about this line, please contact me. I have gathered information about he other 4 children of William Henry and Sophronia, as well as the Ohio and Pennsylvania lines. Thanks. Cathy
I recently received the following information on one of my RHODES' lines. Do the names Mathias RHOADES and Celesta WESTON sound familiar? My line connects to Laura RHOADES and Walter NEWMAN. Will gladly share the information I have. - Karen Borton In the book, "Spencerville" by Dr. Carey there is a reference to Charles A. RHOADES. Some folks dispute the accuracy of info in the book, but it's at least a start. The info is as follows: Charles A RHOADES b. 1843 d. 1928 (Only child of Mathias (b. 1813) and Celesta WESTON.) He was a Civil War soldier. Charles married Kate BOWMAN (d. 1876) and they had one son, Frank, of Akron. His second wife was Caroline BURLEY (d. 1942). Their 3 children: 1. Metta (married Arthur FURNISH) and their children are: Harold: lived in Leo, IN Charles: is now in a nursing home Mearle Dean: lives in Spencerville, IN 2. Laura (married Walter NEWMAN) d. abt 1917 and their children are: Tressie Mae b. 1905 Marian C. b. 1916 3. Bernie A. (married Esa BOZER) and their children are: Joyce Alice Gilbert
I found your posing in DeKalb intriging - - especially your mention of Hattie Smith - - we had a Hattie Dell Smith in our line of Howey - - do you have any dates or places?? I have been stumped on the Smith line. Our Hattie was born in 1885 and died in 1946 - - she had a brother, Schuyler Beryl. They are buried at Leo Cemetery but lived north of Leo at Hurstown. I'd be interested in any info you might have. Thanks, Cheri (Howey)
My great great grandfather, Henry Smith, moved to DeKalb County in 1841 with his wife Jane Shainholz Smith. Jane died in 1853 leaving 6 small children, and Emeline E. Robinson (a young girl of 18) married Henry and then subsequently bore six more children. Henry was presumably a prominant citizen of DeKalb Co., and his farm "Lovely Dale" is portrayed in the DeKalb Co. Atlas. The virtues of Emeline are noted in the genealogy of the Smith family by John Martin Smith (a descendent of Henry and Jane), but yet I can find little information on Emeline. She married in 1853, and presumably was 18, and Henry is buried alone at Eddy Cemetary (Jane is at Hamilton Cemetary). I know nothing about where Emeline was born, nor where and when she died. I have found some information on an Emeline Smith, but the death record that I found said that her father was Sam Till (or Yill), and with being married at 18, this does not sound like the right person. I know that Emeline and Henry had one other son that lived to maturity (other than my great grandfather) and this was Owen Elba Smith. I believe that he married a Hattie Workman and had 2 daughters, but I know nothing more of this line. Does anyone have information on any of these folks? Any help would be appreciated!
