In a message dated 99-04-24 22:31:54 EDT, you write: << John B. GONSER and Catherine DeVORE moved to IA >> Do you know any more about the DeVore family????? I have this mysterious Julia DeVore, my GGgrandmother, who had a child named James Albert Moore b. 3/2/1872 in Butler Indiana (close to or in DeKalb Co). The father was John Moore but for some reason a cousin told my mom that she didnt think he was married to Julia. James Albert Moore married and died in Garrett, DeKalb Co. So far we havent found anything more on Julia. I found one set of DeVore's on the 1860 census, but in Tippecanoe Co which is the other side of the state so we dont know for sure: James DeVore age 47 b. KY Julia " age 16 b. IN John " age 15 b. IN Frances " age 12 b. IN Jeremiah " age 09 b. IN If you happen to see a Julia DeVore anywhere while looking for yours please let me know...I'll keep an eye out for a Catherine too. Kathy
This list is so quiet. Hopefully, if my mom is up to it (recent surgery), we may be going to DeKalb County this Friday to find more on her grandparents etc. Does anyone know if/where Naturalization records from 1860-1884 are kept and if there is an index? The marriage and death indexes for DeKalb county dont list many of the people that I KNOW were married and died there...any suggestions there? The birth index....yeesh! That listed my GGgrandmother with 5 different names...including listing her as 2 different surnames on TWINS, listed her as Martha Bessie and Martha Bassie....and includes a third child born to her that day as a Female...she had twin boys...not triplets of multiple sexes. For one uncle they have his birth listed twice with no first name...just the same date and what looks like different page numbers: Lumm -- Henry Myrtle -- M W May 14 1902 20H-20 16 Lumm -- Henry Myrtle Bessa M W May 14 1902 H-4 26 Anyone know what those end numbers in the index are?? These weren't twins, they were the same Walter Lumm. Any suggestions on finding my LUMM, BASSA/BESSIE/BASSIE/BESSE/BESSA (told by an uncle that the name was actually MASSEY) MOORE, LEOWES, DEVORE (all DeKalb names) and suggestions on going there prepared on Friday...much much appreciated. Thank you Kathy Huish
I think it is called "Butler Cemetery". It is off of State Road 6, East of Butler. Go through town toward Edgerton - - past an old bowling alley -- you have to go right a short jog accross the railroad tracks and the cemetery will be on your left (but it is not on SR 6 -- it is on a little side road). I don't know for sure who handles the cemetery information but the person who digs the graves is Jimmie Eck (his phone number is 21-868-2037) -- he (or his wife) can tell you who to contact for more information. There are still some McNabbs in the Butler area - - one of the ladies in the Butler License Bureau is married to Wayne McNabb and they live near Butler, Wayne has a brother named Robert - - their father is Kenneth McNabb -- don't know if that helps or not. Good luck in your search. Cheri
Hi! Can anyone tell me the name of the cemetery in Butler. I believe it is on Highway 6. If I remember right, it is on the left side of the road if you're coming from Kendallville. Also, does anyone know who has the cemetery records that tell who was buried where? I'm trying to find the place my ggg grandfather was buried. His name was Robert McNabb and he died at the home of his son Daniel McNabb in 1875. I wonder if he was buried in an unmarked grave. Daniel was buried in the cemetery in Butler. I would surely appreciate any help anyone could give. Thanks! Yours in Christ, Debbie

I have quite a few families in DeKalb that I have been after. This is my first time using this mailing, so I'd like to list my surnames JUST IN CASE! I have McNabb, Everetts, McClellan, Robinett, Thompson & Hart. My first question is if anyone has information as to where the Wabash Hotel in Butler was located and if it is still standing. I am planning a trip to Fort Wayne with a pit stop in Butler for this weekend. Thanks, Stacey Konczal [email protected]
I recently received my first copy of "Diggings" since joining the DeKalb Genealogical Society. Can someone tell me how to interpret the multi-page Index? There is no explanation, just a long list of names with a number after each. Thanks, John DEAL WAGONER Researching WAGGONER/WAGONER, OBERLIN, COSPER, WEEKS, in DeKalb Co.

I am researching for any information on the parents of Leonard Hartman who lived in DeKalb Co. in mid to latter 1800's, He married Maria Mertz. I know his father was named Leonhard (I found that on the ship passenger list), his mother was listed as Epha. I would like to know her maiden name and where they emigrated from in Germany. I am also researching the Hovarter family. If anyone would happen to have a photo of Leonard and Maria, or any of the early Hovarter's - namely, John and Nancy (Weirich) Hovarter, and Henry and Catherine Hovarter I would like very much to obtain copies. Please contact me if you have any information to share. Thanks. Sharon [email protected]

Hi, I'm new to this list and am asking for help. We are trying to resolve the maiden or prior marriage name for the bride of Owen S. Tustison married 01 Feb 1914 in DeKalb, Co. We believe the bride's first name was Hazel, but are unclear about her last name. Can anyone out there help us? Thanks so much. Gary Tustison
Hello all, I'm sure that any of you who have recently checked out the web page for DeKalb County, IN are aware that we are working to get the 1850 census online. You can now find Butler and Troy Townships at that site. Our goal is to eventually have all the DeKalb Townships online there. However, Auburn, Concord, Jackson and Newville Townships are also online - but at this point they're just not as easy to find. If you're interested, you might check out the following web site addresses: For the DeKalb County Indiana Archives try http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/in/dekalb/dekalb.htm You will find Concord Township, parts 1 & 2, there, as well as Butler and Troy Townships. For the USGENWEB on-line census project for Indiana try http://www.usgenweb.org/census/states/indiana.htm This site lists all the Indiana counties for each of the census years and whether or not they have been assigned for transcription. If you are interested in helping transcribe census records, this is also where you should go to choose the county and year you wish to work on. Other states besides Indiana are also available. Scroll down to the 1850 list, DeKalb County. In the space before my name you will see a box with "USGENWEB Census Project Butler/Troy/Concord". If you click on this box it will take you to an ftp index. I don't know if all computer programs will support reading ftp (as opposed to http) files. Each item in the index indicates a separate township (Concord has 2 since it was split into 2 parts) as follows: pg0188b.txt = Butler pg0196b.txt = Troy pg0201b.txt = Newville pg0206b.txt = Auburn pg0270b.txt = Concord, Part 1 pg0282b.txt = Concord, Part 2 pg0283b.tx = Jackson We hope you enjoy looking around. If you have any questions feel free to e- mail me. I'll respond as soon as I can. Sue Sablic [email protected] Transcribing 1850 census for DeKalb County, Indiana
HENDERSHOT's and YEAGLEY's lived in DeKalb County for a while. Thought I would share this obit - Karen Margaret Yeagley Margaret Ann Hendershot, daughter of John and Charlotte Hendershot, was born in Crawford county, Pa., August 5, 1837, and departed this life, February 6, 1925. She was the fourth in a family of nine children, only one of whom now survives, a brother, James of Auburn, Ind., who is nearly 84 years of age. The Hendershot family removed to Ohio, near Williams Center, in 1844, where they remained about three years, and went to DeKalb county, Indiana, where they bought and cleared a farm just over the St. Joe river west of Farmer. Here the father died in a few years and was buried in Williams Center, and the mother with the true pioneer spirit and her children's help, finished the task and made a comfortable home, where the mother died at the age of 75 years. Margaret was married to William Yeagley, on November 29, 1854 and started housekeeping in Williams Center, going then to a farm near Newville, where the mother remained with her small family during his three years of service in the Civil war. To this union were born six children, Mrs. Blanche Donley, of Farmer, Andrew Parke, who died at Olten Texas, April 22, 1913, Ida May, at the age of 15 months, Mrs. Lottie Winn of Defiance, Ohio, Sherman and Mrs. Madge B. Cunningham, of Farmer. Besides these there are 14 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren left to feel their great loss. The husband and father having preceded her in death on the 19th of February 1915, mother has only been waiting her summons to join him and the children who have gone before. It is not for us who are left to grieve but rather to rejoice. She became a charter member of Lew Bowker Woman's Relief Corps in 1891 and remained a true and loyal member until the day of her departure, when she was transferred to the Order of the True and Loyal in the other world. Funeral services were held at the home Monday afternoon, February 9th, at 1:30, Rev. S. R. Aldrich officiating, and Mrs. J. Evrett Smith, of Edgerton, singing two beautiful songs. Pall bearers were Clyde and Guy Yeagley, Claude Winn, Richard Yeagley, Dale Donley and Bina Conkey, all grandsons of the deceased. The interment was in Farmer cemetery. >From The Bryan Press, Bryan, Ohio, February 12, 1925.
