I bought it on Ebay; it just has the insides, but it is full of Indiana biographies. I am not researching this family, just thought I would share. I do not know anymore about these families or these surnames. NOTE: I don’t know if there is any additional mention of this family in the book, it has no index. I do not want to sell this book. I am typing the biographies from it. Typed by Lora Radiches: Other surnames mentioned in the biography of REV. MATTHIAS LORING HAINES, D. D. ARE: Haines, Brower, Putnam, Loring Flames, Kouwenhoven, Higgs, MacDonald REV. MATTHIAS LORING HAINES, D. D. It is much to have rendered nearly a half-century of active service in the vineyard of the Divine Master and in the aiding and uplifting of humankind. Such service stands to the tasting honor of Doctor Haines, who was for thirty-five years pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Indianapolis and who is still retained by this representative organization in the honorary office of pastor emeritus. It is a special satisfaction to the publishers of this history to incorporate within its pages a tribute to this revered clergyman. Doctor Haines was born at Aurora, Dearborn County, Indiana, May 4, 1850, and is a son of Dr. Abram Brower and Julia Putnam (Loring) flames, his father having long been one of the able and honored physicians and surgeons of the Hoosier State. The public schools afforded Dr. Matthias L. Haines his preliminary education, and in 1871 he was graduated in Wabash College, with the degree of Bachelor of Arts, while th! e year 1874 marked his reception of the degree of Master of Arts, from the same institution, which in 1887 conferred upon him also the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity. In the year 1874 he was graduated in the Union Theological Seminary of New York and was ordained a clergyman of the Presbyterian Church. In the same year he became pastor of the Reformed Church at Astoria, New York, where he continued his service until 1885, in which year he accepted the pastorate of the First Presbyterian Church of Indianapolis, a charge that was to be his during the remainder of his active pastorate. There is much of significance in the fact that this now venerable clergyman has in his long career in the ministry held but these two pastoral charges, for this implies that his work has been one of ability and consecrated zeal, that he has given constructive service along both spiritual and temporal lines, and that h! e has not only proved an earnest pulpit orator and efficient executive but has also won and retained secure place in communal love and esteem. Doctor Haines is a trustee of his alma mater, Wabash College, and is a director of Lane Theological Seminary. He served for twenty- five years as president of the Indianapolis Benevolent Society. He is a Republican in political allegiance, is a member of the Loyal Legion, and has membership in the Indianapolis Literary Club and the Columbia Club. Though he has recently (in May, 1931) passed the eighty-first milestone on the journey of life, he retains command of his physical and mental powers, takes lively interest in current events, still is a worker for his fellow men and for the cause of Christ, and in the gracious evening of a long life of worthy service he may well feel that his “lines are cast in pleasant places,” for he remains in a community in which his circle of friends is virtually limited only by that of his many acquaintances. His home is at 1408 North Penns! ylvania Street. On the 7th of May, 1885, was solemnized the marriage of Doctor Haines to Miss Sarah Louise Kouwenhoven, of Steinway, Long Island, New York, she being a representative of one of the Holland Dutch families that made settlement in the Empire State in the Colonial period of American history. Doctor and Mrs. Haines have two daughters: Lydia Rapelye is the wife of William P. Higgs, and they reside in Trumansburg, New York; Julia Loring is the wife of John A. MacDonald, their home being at 1408 North Pennsylvania Street, Indianapolis.
