Heustis was born Caroline Smith, per a long-time Dearborn County researcher. Caroline, her husband Henry and her first two children can be found in the Newburgh, Orange County, NY 1850 US Census, family 1595. Their child Stephen was born in Illinois in 1857 according to later Census data, so apparently Henry and Caroline followed Henry's father Jesse to Illinois in 1856, then removed to Dearborn County after March 1857 and before 1860. The family is present in Lawrenceburgh in 1860, 1870 and 1880 according to Census records. Given the 1850 Census presence of Caroline and Henry in the house of John Scott, aged 60, and the presence of a Maria Smith, aged 53, it is possible that Caroline's middle name could be Scott in honor of her mother's maiden surname, but that is complete speculation at this point. Only five children of Henry and Caroline are known by me, so the name of the sixth child mentioned in the obituary (if anyone has it) would be of interest.
