    3. My grgrgrandfather Jacob Smith/Schmidt/ was born in 1827 Alsac/Lorraine and at that time it was France and so the story goes he came to America when four years old. I have never been able to find his parents names. I have looked on sites for a connection in Hamilton Co., OH, Franklin Co., IN, Dearborn County, IN and Orange Co., In. Jacob Smith enlisted in the Mexican War in 1847 from Brooksville, IN and was discharged in 1848 in Missouri. Jacob Smith received a US Land Grant in Marion Co., Bauer, IA in bet. 1848 and 1850. In the US Census 1850, Jacob 24, born France and Matilda age 21 White born Indiana, were at Bauer, Dallas Township, Marion Co., IA. The little settlement of Bauer, Marion Co., IA was settled in approx, 1848 by the families of Bauer and Metz. The history of the Bauer and Metz, they came over from Germany about 1833 and were around Cincinnati, Ohio for a short time and then Brookville, IN and then came to Iowa around 1848. For this reason, I think Jacob Smith knew these people and that is why he came to Iowa. Jacob in 1854 married Emmerintia Ohnemus at Keokuk, Iowa. I am not sure what happened to Matilda. I have a copy of a record of marriage of Jacob Smith and Matilda Bundy August of 1848 in Orange Co., IN. It states consent of Fathers but no names. Would any anyone have any connection with this Jacob Smith and Matilda Bundy. In fact, the marriage is listed twice, one lists Matilda Bundy and the other one lists Matilda Bunda. This gives you an idea why I am looking in Orange, Franklin and Dearborn, IN and Hamilton Co., OH. Thank you for any help you can give me.
