This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: BEDTHIJA SMITH HURST HUTSON YORK Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Sh.2ADI/2283 Message Board Post: BEDTHIJA BEDTHIJA BEDTHIJA BEDTHIJA BEDTHIJA BEDTHIJA I am posting my info through out different states and counties in hopes that this name has surfaced elsewhere. If anyone out there has any knowledge of this name I would love to hear about it and suggestions are welcome. I am looking for any info on my GGgrandfather whose, I believe due to the info that I have found and has been sent to me, last name is BEDTHIJA. His son, my Ggrandfather Charles Bedthija Smith, was born in Indiana and died in Illinois and Charles’ daughter-Zetta Ann SMITH YORK, my grandmother, was born in Illinois and died in Illinois. I believe his last name is BEDTHIJA and that he came from Germany and possibly returned to Germany. I am listing all info, and a couple of stories, that I have on his child/children. I have nothing on him. It seems that my Ggrandfather-Charles was kept at a distance with his grandchildren, my mother and aunt does not remember much about him and they were not allowed to visit him even though he lived within visiting range. My mother and aunt said that there mother-Zetta was never told anything about her grandparents-Charles’ parents. So what’s the Hush-Hush all about? 1st Story: My sister remembers our grandmother, Zetta Ann SMITH YORK, telling her about a grandfather, she does not remember if she specified which grandfather, that came from Germany married a “Native American” (this part I question but she swears that is how she remembers the story) had child/children wife died and the grandfather not being able to speak much English returned to Germany. Marriage Record in Vermillion Co., Indiana: Book 7 page 119 list groom-BERTHIJA, Chalres (exact spelling probably a typo) bride-HURST, Minnie A. date-April 5, 1896. (If this is correct they probably lied on the 1900 census about being married 8 years) Book 7 page 49 list groom-STURM, Harry (probably Minnie’s first husband and probably Ross’s, (Ross from 1900 census) father) bride-HURST, Minnie A. date-none listed. 1900 U.S. Federal Census, Edgar Co., IL: Line 24/BEDTHIJA, Charles/Head/W M/b. Illinois/father’s birth pl. Indiana/mother’s birth pl. Illinois. Changes name to SMITH after 1900 census. (or was using his middle name as last name in 1900 census) 2nd Story: My aunt remembered her mother, Zetta Ann SMITH YORK, my grandmother, telling her that when she was a little girl one day the mailman was questioning her parents about the name/names on the mail and when her parents explained to the mailman he said “Just change your name.” Divorced after 1900 Census. (I am assuming that he is divorced before he signed the WWI Draft even though it doesn’t ask for marital statues he states his closest living is his daughter not spouse.) WWI Draft Registration Card: Signed-Charles Bedthija Smith on Sept. 12, 1918 in Terre Haute, Indiana. Residence-Terre Haute, Vigo, Indiana. Birth Date-Oct. 10, 1873, Closest living relative-Zetta York in Edgar Co., Illinois. The only other BEDTHIJA that I have found: WWI Draft Registration Card: Allen Co., Indiana is Henry J BEDTHIJA, born Feb. 3 1895 in Scotland, Illinois (Edgar Co.) Single with no next of kin and states that he has no one solely dependent on him. Death Certificate: Name-Charles Bedthija Smith Place of Death-Paris Hospital, Edgar Co. Illinois Date of Death-May 9, 1944 Birth Date-Oct. 12, 1870(this date is different from the 1900 Census and the WWI Draft, not sure which is correct) Father & Mother-unknown Informant-Jack Smith Place of Burial-Mt. Carmel, Brouiletts Creek Twp., Edgar Co. Illinois Thank you for taking the time to read my query and an enormous THANK YOU to everyone at Rootsweb for helping me find the info that I have. I found nothing in the cemetery books I have. I checked the census records on Ancestry and found them in Jackson Township of Dearborn County and that area has not been published as yet. The 1860 census shows Clauda age 67, Jane 50, William 27, Joseph 23, John 21, Elizabeth 17, Robert 15 and Jane 14. Clauda and Jane born in Ireland. William born in Ohio and the remaining children born in Indiana. As for the cemetery books, I believe that volume A and B are out of print. Sorry I can't be of more help. I always watch the message boards, and was very excited to hear about this cemetery Record book. Is it on line? I am researching my family history, however so far I have only accessed family information and what I can find on ancestor.com I have lots of old pictures and a letter written by an old aunt who lived to be 101. Can this book be purchased? The ancestors that I am interested in are Claudius Anderson and wife Jane Mann Anderson they came to America from Ireland in 1830 and settled in Dearborn county living there until they died. Claudius DOB 1790-1874 Jane DOB 1801-1881 We know that they came to America with 3 children Jane Anderson Cairns born in Ireland in 1821 Sara Anderson Karr born in Ireland in 1827 I believe that another child was born between 1822-1826 and was possibly a female. I have picture of a Jennie Anderson who I wonder if was the 3rd child and never married? Claude and Jane stayed briefly in Cincinnati Ohio where a son William B was born2/3/1831. I have a picture of his tombstone and it states his DOD June 15, 1904. His wife's inscription reads Anna C. Anderson Jan 29, 1837-Sept 3,1927. George Houston was born in 1833 John Anderson was 44 in the 1880 census Joe Anderson was 23 in the 1860 census Elizabeth 12/4/1840-1/6/1873 as per IFI Family Search Robert DOB 1/13/1844 I also know that in 1840 John and George Anderson were living neighbors to Claudius in Dearborn County. In 1850 a 22 year old James B Mann was living with George so I wonder if some of the Jane's family came with them to the USA. I have accessed a article written about Robert Anderson written in 1909. I also found an article about John Cairns who married Jane Anderson. I think this was in an article or book named History of Dearborn and Ohio Counties Indiana-1885 submitted by Jackie DeCamp. George Houston my GG Grandfather married Delana Wilson on November 6 1856 and moved to Morgan County Indian, they left Morgan county in 1883 with his sister Sara Anderson Karr and the two families came to Missouri by rail. If you know anything about this line of Anderson's or can be of any help I would appreciate any information that you have. Is there a St. Martin Catholic Cemetery in Yorkville, Dearborn County, Indiana? If yes, how would one inquire about a burial in that cemetery. Much appreciation for any help. Jane
My grgrgrandfather Jacob Smith/Schmidt/ was born in 1827 Alsac/Lorraine and at that time it was France and so the story goes he came to America when four years old. I have never been able to find his parents names. I have looked on sites for a connection in Hamilton Co., OH, Franklin Co., IN, Dearborn County, IN and Orange Co., In. Jacob Smith enlisted in the Mexican War in 1847 from Brooksville, IN and was discharged in 1848 in Missouri. Jacob Smith received a US Land Grant in Marion Co., Bauer, IA in bet. 1848 and 1850. In the US Census 1850, Jacob 24, born France and Matilda age 21 White born Indiana, were at Bauer, Dallas Township, Marion Co., IA. The little settlement of Bauer, Marion Co., IA was settled in approx, 1848 by the families of Bauer and Metz. The history of the Bauer and Metz, they came over from Germany about 1833 and were around Cincinnati, Ohio for a short time and then Brookville, IN and then came to Iowa around 1848. For this reason, I think Jacob Smith knew these people and that is why he came to Iowa. Jacob in 1854 married Emmerintia Ohnemus at Keokuk, Iowa. I am not sure what happened to Matilda. I have a copy of a record of marriage of Jacob Smith and Matilda Bundy August of 1848 in Orange Co., IN. It states consent of Fathers but no names. Would any anyone have any connection with this Jacob Smith and Matilda Bundy. In fact, the marriage is listed twice, one lists Matilda Bundy and the other one lists Matilda Bunda. This gives you an idea why I am looking in Orange, Franklin and Dearborn, IN and Hamilton Co., OH. Thank you for any help you can give me.
