There are several columns for citizenship; for example, in the 1900 census: year of immigration (the year he arrived), number of years in US, both columns apply only to foreign-born persons. If a person was born abroad and had taken no steps toward naturalization, "Al" for alien is used. If a person had declared his intention and taken out his "first papers", "Pa" is in the column. If he has become a full citizen by taking out second or final papers, this is indicated by "Na" (naturalized); I also found "Nat" which is probably the same thing. In 1920, the year of naturalization was asked. In one case I found the term "Am cit". I also often found "NR", which is not defined in the census book. This was mostly for women, so just guessing, it could mean "not required". Glorianne
