Pat, I have NO idea whether this will mean anything to you, but there are Girtons in Marion County, IN. A William Girton was a vice-principal and/or dean of boys at Ben Davis HS in Indianapolis for roughly five eons. He was also head of the local Selective Service System - made him really popular with the guys, as you may imagine. All his PA announcements started with his booming voice raising the dead with, "PARDON ME..." Interesting character. Best of luck in your search.
