    3. Currently working on Clay County ancestors of the McNicol family, who came to Clay County around 1869. In Clay County records the names are spelled MANY ways. Francis McNicol, (Listed as McNicholls on the naturalization intent record) born in Scotland, sailed to the United States from Glasgow in July 1869, and eventually came to Clay County. He was a grocer in Knightsville, married to Sarah McGuire. His brother Thomas spelled his name differently. My line is: Francis McNicol, married to Bridget Conners McNicol, both of them born in Ireland. Their daughter Mary McNicol, born in Belfast Ireland on January 8, 1853, married Barnard Martin, born in Scotland. They were married June 1, 1871 in Clay County. Their children were: Rosa McNicol McForan, Veronica McNicol Caren (sp?); Mary McNicol Martin, Thomas McNicol, and Frank McNicol. So we have two generations named Frank McNicol or Francis McNicol. I have found nothing to show me that Frank Sr. was in this country with his family. I also have no info on Rosa McNicol McForan or Veronica McNicol Caren/Corwin/Corwen. These names came from Bridget McNichol's obituary. When she died in 1901, the obit said she came from Ireland to Clay County over forty years ago. Some of the McNicols, however you care to spell it, moved to Indianapolis and Chicago. If anyone recognizes any of these names, or wants to ask about someone not mentioned here, please contact me.
