    1. Re: CREWS/MOSS FAMILY
    2. Here is what I have on Moss. I think I have seen the Moss name in Randolph Co, NC, records, have wondered if they are another of the families associated with the Luthers who all came from same place, moved on to Iowa about same time. ---------------------- Descendants of James Elza MOSS 6 James Elza MOSS was born on 8 Sep 1822.1 I am sure his birth and death dates must be from his tomb stone. He was living on 20 May 1846 in Clay County, Indiana. At that time, James Elzia Moss and wife Martha sell land to George Moss. This land was the West 1/2 North West 1/4 and also North East 1/4 NW 1/4, section?, Township 11 North, the Range 6 West. It was acknowledged by sellers before Jesse McIntire, recorder. It appears to me, in checking the B. L. M. land patent site on the Internet, that George Moss, Jacob B Moss, and James E.Moss all had land in section 9. I couldn't read this section number in the deed mentioned above. James also patented SE 1/4 SE 1/4, T 11N, R6 W. James E. moss and wife Martha of Clay County sold land to Christian Kintzley on 9 Jan wary 1847, $80 for 40 acres. This was the SE 1/4 NE 1/4, Section 7, T11N, R 6 W. This land was originally patented by Henry Brooks on 10 December 1841. He appeared on the census in 1850 in Boone County, Iowa. At that time they were listed on page 65. James E. Moss age 27, born Kentucky, real-estate $800. Martha 27 NC, Clark 3 IN, Charles 1 IN. He resided , when he sold land in Clay County, on 17 Sep 1850 in Boone County, Iowa. James and Martha sold to Pleatsant Oliver for $150, 40 acres in Clay Co. SW 1/4, NW 1/4 Sec 31 Tp 11 N R 6 W. witnesses Samuel and Dovey Luther. There is an affadavit from the court in Boone Co, IA. He resided , when he built a brick house, in 1857 in Boone County, Iowa.2 He appeared on the census in 1860 in Boone County, Iowa. They are listed on page 294. J E Moss 37 Kentucky, farmer RE $7500/PP $1850. Martha 37, Clark 13, C H 11, Samuel 9, Alvin 7, Edmund 5, Claudia? (f) 5/12. He died on 8 Aug 1867 in Luther, Boone County, Iowa.3 He is buried at Fairview Cemetery, Madrid, Douglas Township, Boone County, Iowa. James Elza MOSS was married to Martha LUTHER on 20 Mar 1845.1 Martha LUTHER was born on 15 Jun 1822 in Randolph County, North Carolina.1 She appeared on the census in 1870 in Boone County, Iowa. Martha is shown as head of household, in Worthy Township, p. 167. She was 48 born North Carolina, with real-estate valued at $12,720, personal property $1952. Charles H. Moss 21 Indiana, real-estate $4555, personal property $300. Alvin 16, Edward 13, Clarinda 10, Arminda 7. She appeared on the census in 1880 in Boone County, Iowa. She is listed in Worth Township, p. 157. She was 57 born North Carolina. Children still at home included Edwin 23, Clarinda 20, and Arminda 17. the children said their father was born in Kentucky. She died on 1 Mar 1902 in Luther, Boone County, Iowa.1 The date I was originally given was 6 May 1872, however, she was still living at the time of the 1880 census. There is a Martha Moss listed in the Fairview Cemetery where James E. Moss is buried, but the birth date for that Martha is 15 June 1852, so I don't know if that is the right one or not. ------------------- Note: I do have their children if any needs.
