First of all I must send many thanks to the folks at the Clay County Genealogy Library and the Sullivan County Historical Museum and the Library in Sullivan County. They were all so helpful!! A little background: I live in Niles, MI and my Grandfather and Grandmother are here visiting for the summer. I asked my grandfather to take me to Hymera and Saline, Indiana to the places he grew up. I wanted to see the old farm, where the Risher Mine used to be and the old house we went to as children to visit his mother Lulu, my great grandmother. So we borrowed a mini van, packed up my two little ones, my mother, my grandparents and myself. And headed off to the 'homestead'. We went to the places listed above including the K of P Cemetery, the Merom Cemetery and another Cemetery across the street from aUnited Methodist Church that my great grandfather had decorated on the inside many years ago. We gathered information 4 generations back. Before we left we didn't even know my grandfather's grandfather's name. Know I even know his great-grandfather's name. I felt the trip was a Huge success. I took lots of photos and wrote lots of notes. I was a little disappointed that the farm and any sign of the mine were gone though. But.... I got more out of the drive there and back than I did all the information gathered. I could have gone there by myself and gathered the same information but, I would not have had the privilege of listening to the conversations between my mother and grandparents. "Remember this Dad?" "Oh my, I can't believe how that has changed." and "Do you remember when the cats got car sick and we dropped them off there?" "Do you remember when we hung white sheets up on the water tower and watched movies at night?" I must say that my favorite vacation ever taken was the summer my grandparents and mother took me to Sullivan and Clay County Indiana. ( I bet not too many can say that) Now to the info gathered: My grandfather, William Thomas McClain is the son of Lulu P. Risher and William Thomas McClain.
