There is the possibility your family member arrived in New Orleans. Many Central Europeans did so, and then traveled to states like Illinois and Indiana via river. They usually were headed for a friend or relative who was already in that region. Water travel must have been low cost. Others got to Chicago via water and foot, then took a single route to Minnesota. I can't remember the number but it is Foster Avenue on Chicago's North side.
