    3. You can call the Indiana State Library in Indianapolis, genealogy division, and they have an index to check the mortality index for a name you seek. They can't give you the info from the index, as I understood it, just tell you if your person is listed. I know you want 1860, but for the 1880 census she told me the person had to die between June 1879 and June 1880. My person died in January 1879, so I was out of luck. I don't know if it is exactly the same sequence of months for 1860. If you decide to call, I had to try about 10 times over several hours before I got through with another question today. 317-232-3689 I believe they close at 4 or 4:30 today, but on Thursday are open until 8:00, possibly later. Anyway, there are evening hours on Thurs. so you might get through anytime up until 8.... ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bill Strahle" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, October 09, 2002 11:26 AM Subject: [INCLAY] Mortality list/Mattox > Is the a Mortality List for the 1860 census in Indiana? I am looking for the death of a John B Mattox who was most likely the son of Baptist Mattox. John can be found in the 1850 census in the household of Baptist. John marries Maria J Neal in Clay Co in 1855. In the 1860 census, Maria is listed as head of household with a child b c, 1859 so there is a good chance that John died in the year proceeding the census. > > Bill Strahle > > > ==== INCLAY Mailing List ==== > This list brought to you by Rootsweb,be sure to check us out at > http://www.rootsweb.com/ > > > >

    3. You're right, the mortality index is for the 12 months preceding the census date. Thanks for the information about Indianapolis.
