Hello Heather, Thanks for responding to my post concerning the Risher Mine. I think I shall post a Query so that more people can respond regarding the involvement of their ancestors in Clay County mines. What do you know of your ancestor's involvement in the mine? Do any documents exist which show the layout of the mine? Photos of the workers? Payroll registers? My Grandmother's house is across the road and West from the mine. She has explained to me that they used to keep and water the mules just East of her house. The water-filled shaft was still there until the early 1980's, when Brazil Coal & Clay set up their office nearby. Much of the shaft had been filled up with junk that people dumped there. BC&C completely filled the shaft, and all that now remains is a small gob pile just North of the site. My Grandfather, before he died, had hoped that I would get to see the mine uncovered. One wonders what is down there, still. Probably all underwater. About fifteen, or so, years ago. Part of the Saline Road (off of State Road 59) dropped several inches. Likely this was from one of the shafts. That is about all I know about Risher Mine...so far. I appreciate any further help you can provide regard the history of the mine, and the men who worked there. Thanks Again, Brad Crabb ----- Original Message ----- From: <hethmitchell@juno.com> To: <INCLAY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, March 11, 2000 1:55 PM Subject: Re: Great Map News > I believe my family owned the Risher shaft mine. > > Heather > > > ==== INCLAY Mailing List ==== > Help support Rootsweb, become a member at; > http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/how-to-subscribe.html > >
