NOTE: There is no longer a newspaper archives at IU and the microfilm cannot be located. The cards from which the microfilm was made is part of the clipping file available at the MCHS. The cards may or may not contain the entire obituary. MERCER, Mrs. (?) (Mary E.?) Died on July 25, 1881 at Knightsville in Clay Co., Indiana. Buried in Bloomington. The wife of Felix G. Mercer. Mrs. Mercer was a sister of the Stockwell boys. Republican Progress, Aug. 3, 1881. Newspaper Archives, I.U. Library. [See above note.] Note: Felix G. Mercer married Mary E. Stockwell on Sept. 20, 1852 in Monroe Co., IN. (This was evidently Felix G. Mercer, a son of another Felix who is listed on p. 444, entry #54, city of Bloomington, 1850 Monroe Co. Census. To make matters even more confusing, both father and son seem to have married women named Mary. Mary, the wife of the elder Felix Mercer, appears to be buried in Rose Hill Cemetery. Page 5 of the Rose Hill Cemetery Book 1821-1976, published by the Monroe Co. Genealogical Society, lists Mary A. Mercer, wife of F. G., b. 1-24-1823, d. 6-7-1851). Since the death notice of the younger Mrs. Felix Mercer states she is buried in Bloomington, it is possible that the Amanda Mercer buried beside Mary A. Mercer could be the wife of the younger Felix Mercer. The tombstone was obviously in poor condition as the copier questioned whether or not the name was Amanda, could not read the year of the birth date and might possibly have misread the date of death. Date of death was listed as 7-5-1851. Could it have been 7-25-1881? Data Entry Volunteer - Lana Carrol Taylor
