I have a copy of Assessors Plat Book 1886 Posey Twp, Clay County, IN Section 1; Congressional Township No. 12, R. 7- outside Cloverland It lists to the north of Cloverland land owned by Ellen L. Modesitt -80 acres -due east of her is John Eppert Heirs with 157. 50 acres Then Ellen L. Modesit has another 10 acress * the town of Cloverland - Multiple owners in small tracts of land-Two roads going through this town 340 & US. 40 south and west of Cloverland is W.S. and Lotta R. Carpenter 10 acres & adjacent to further south is J. Robinson 88 acres- east of him is W.S. & Lotta R. Carpenter 79. 28 acres- directly east of Carpenter land is Oliver Hiriam Smith Heirs(my line) 80 acres- going directly north back towards Cloverland is J. E. Crouse 34 acres and John M. Lucas 40 acres. The Carpenter cemetery sits between J. S. Robinson's 88 and W. S.& Lotta R.Carpenters 79. 28 acres. This map is just for about 630 acres surrounding Cloverland, and most of these are not the original owners of the land. The Bowles, Modesitts, Bemis, and other families lived also in the area. Some of the Bemiss/Bemass families lived in Cloverland town proper. I believe that the Modesitts and Bowles intermarried and the Bemiss married into the McBride families. Very interesting community!!!
