Many geneology software packages allow you to privatize your datafile. Family Tree Maker allows you to protect the privacy of living individuals by designating certain facts as private. When you privatize your file, Family Tree Maker temporarily replaces all data fields for living individuals with the word "private." Only relationships between living individuals will be retained. This process prevents sensitive information from being imported, exported, printed, copied, or published on the Internet. If this issue is of concern to you, I would strongly suggest purchasing software with this feature. Also many geneology websites will publish nothing but a surname and the word 'living' for a first name along with the relationships if the individual is less than 110 years old and no death information is posted. They are as anxious to protect living individuals as you are - it wouldn't be good business to do otherwise. Please also remember that any ancestory information pulled from a family tree posted on the internet should not be treated as fact until you've confirmed it through official records. It's a pointer in a new direction to research, not written in stone. I've found several of my family suddenly 'acquired' spouses and children when I had already established through government records that they had died with no descendents.
