Posted on: Clay County, In Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/In/Clay?read=985 Surname: Chance, Barnes ------------------------- Purnel Chance had three sons: Daniel, John, and Tilman. The 1860 Van Buren Co., Arkansas, says John (b. @ 1792) was born in Maryland and that his son Pernal (b. @ 1820) was born in Maryland also. The 1850 Van Buren census gave North Carolina @ 1794 for John and 1820 Indiana for his son Pernal. Purnel Chance and Starling Barnes moved from Guilford County, North Carolina, to Indiana (ending up in Clay County, but there may have been stops along the way). John's wife Anna (b @ 1791 or 1792) was born in North Carolina. (John remarried in Conway County, Arkansas, in 1862 or '63.) Tilman (1797), son of Purnel (1769) stayed in Clay County after his brother John moved to Arkansas and his other brother Daniel moved to Illinois. I have more on this family, provided to me by a descendant in the Clay Co. Genealogical Society. Also, refer to my query on Dr. John Chance in Van Buren Co queries. I know the family was also connected to Delaware and that John likely was in the War of 1812 there. He was hanged in @ 1863 by Confederate General Joseph Shelby's men for apparently leading (!!!) raids against pro-Confederate families farms and plantations.
