    1. Re: [INCLAY] VEST, Caleb and Thomas G. in Clay Co. about 1830-1875
    2. Blanchard Published April 1884 - Pg 214 The first grist mill in Posey was constructed by Thomas Vest, in Section 24, and was operated by horse power. The buhrs were constructed manufactured out of native rock, and constituted the entire machinery. The building was a mere shed resting upon four forks driven into the ground, and was made large enough to shelter several teams. Each person bringing a grist was obliged to furnish his own team to do his grinding, and many were the hurryings to get to the mill first, as it required several hours to convert a single bushel of corn into meal. People from a distance brought provisions enough with them to last several days, and the scene around the mill sometimes presented the appearance of an emigrant encampment, there being frequently eight or ten persons waiting their respective turns. Vest operated the mill a short time, when he disposed of it ot other parties, who moved it to the north east corner of the township on land belonging to Nathan Williams. It was in operation five or six years, at the end of which time it was allowed to fall into disuse. Pg 287 Other settlers that came in 1832 werer Thomas Vest, George B. Zenor, James Edwards, William Moore, Thomas L. Moore, David Moore, Levi Cromwell, and George Lucas. The first named came from Kentucky, and was a man of character and influence in the little pioneer community where he was highly respected by all his neighbors and friends. He subsequently moved to Posey Township, and later to Iowa, in which State his death occurred many years ago. There are also listings for: Jackson J. Vest, Pg 222 and Roda Vest, Pg 373 Let me know if you want info on them as well. Alan McCullough

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/xh.2ADE/667.735 Message Board Post: My ggg grandfather, Jacob Layer, married Catherine Wolf(e) in Pennslyvania and they came to Clay County between 1840 and 1850; they resided there until they moved over to Vigo sometime before the 1880 census. The only thing I know about Catherine is she was born about 1809 in PA and married there sometime before Feb 1829 when her first son was born. Any chance my Catherine is in your Wolf(e) family? Jacob and Catherine's daughter, Lucinda, married Levi Henry Wolfe. He was born in 1851 in PA and is believed to be the son of Amos and Lydia (Sattazahn) Wolfe. Levi had a sister named Catherine and his father had an unnamed sister born about the time my Catherine was born. I would love to prove my suspicion that they were related. Sharon

    3. My mother (who is a very active age 93) remembers Homer and "Adie". Will check with her to see what she remembers. I do know of 2 houses in or near Poland where Homer and Ada "Adie" lived - they are still homes. I may be able to check the cemetaries for you as well if the weather cooperates. Will stay in touch. 3. I recognize the names of Homes and Ada Bandy from Poland; tho I don't recall a Troth family in the area. There is a creek called Croy's Creek on the Clay/Putnam county line road although there were no families by that name still there when I grew up. If you can tell me what you need on the Bandy's I can check to see what I can find out for you. I'll be there tomorrow (fri 2/18) visiting family. FYI: Cunot is located in Owen Co, IN. ----- Original Message ----- From: <rachelle65@aol.com> To: <INCLAY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, February 17, 2005 12:46 PM Subject: [INCLAY] Looking for Clay County Croy's > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Surnames: Laswell, Bandy, Troth, Croy > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/xh.2ADE/2022 > > Message Board Post: > > Looking for someone who may be working Clay Co. line of Croy's.
