if you look at a census report for 1910 the residents of the Knightsville Orphans Home were listed as "inmates" in van buren twp. you might find the children there. another just interesting tid bit a lot of the children at the Orphans home were baptized into the Knightsville Methodist Church -- not all but it seems that is the church most attended and I feel it was because of closeness to the home. the church should have records if they were baptized there. do you know how to get a hold of any records for the Knightstown home at fort wayne. ----- Original Message ----- From: <bossof123@msn.com> To: <INCLAY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, April 05, 2005 9:38 PM Subject: [INCLAY] Looking for a Theodoria or Belle Barnett /Haines > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Surnames: Barnett/McQueary/Haines > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/xh.2ADE/2040 > > Message Board Post: > > Hello, I am looking for some help PLESE... Hi Sid, First and foremost, thank you for all your trouble. It is really appreciated as this family is just too confusing for words. What I have is Rachael's birthdate of March 11, 1851. I have a copy of a photo undated which pictures Rachael and her two brothers Thomas and Perry. Rachael marries Benjamin Franklin Flowers and they live in Illinois. In the 1880 Census I found them with two daughters, Cecia b. 1877 and Nettie b. 1880. I do know that this daughter, Nettie, lives to maturity. So, my thinking is that this may just be the family I've been searching for and I can discard George. I know I'm being a pest, but this is as close as I've gotten in many years of searching. Would it be possible to try to track this family both back and forward in time? In the 1880 Census, I found a Jackson Corbin, b. 1818 in WV married to Sarah J. b. 1823 in WV. They have a son W. "T." born in 1854 which would make him the correct age for the William T. you found. I have the feeling that this family Corbin was in Harrison County, West Virginia (formerly Virginia) at one time and this is when Rachael and Benjamin Flowers may have met. Thank you so much for everything you've done. Maureen

Sorry, I can not locate a George Corbin in the 1860 Federal Census of Indiana that fits the description of your George. There is a George of the same age in Sullivan County, Indiana living with his father Alex Corbin in 1860, however, he is also listed in his father's household in the 1870 census along with, presumably, his wife, Sarah, and in both 1860 and 1870 this George says he was born in Kentucky. No minor children. The 1860 census did not identify the relationships of the members of the household or marital status unless married in that census year. The below named Benjamin Flowers at age 15 and born in Illinois is employed as a clerk in the household of George, age 62 and Eliza Flowers, age 60 in Harmony Township, Posey County, Indiana. This is not the same location as the George Corbin earlier discussed in Posey Township, Clay County, Indiana. The George Flowers household appears to be a boarding house since George is shown as an inn keeper and there are several surnames listed in the household. The relationship of Benjamin to George is not shown. The Benjamin Flowers with wife Rachael, age 27, in the 1880 Federal Census of Indian Grove , Livingston County, Illinois was born abt 1856 in Virginia. Rachael says she was born in Virginia. At the risk of confusing Corbin families, I do note that there is a nine year old Rachel Corbin born in Virginia listed as part of a family at the top of page 132 of the 1860 Federal Census of Esmen, Livingston County, Illinois, however, the image available to me is missing pages 130 and 131, so I am not able to see the name of the head of the household which would have been at the bottom of page 131 at family #912. This partial household included Sarah, age 38 (probably the mother), Thos. K., age 14, Francis B. (M), age 12, Rachel, age 9, and Wm. T., age 6, all born in Virginia. I suspect this may be more confusing than helpful. Hi Susan, I tried to reply off list and couldn't come up with your email addy. Problem with email program; don't ask, just a pain. Anyway, your message came through without the attachment and since I've been working on this family in both Harrison County, West Virginia and Indiana, I didn't know which list you had responded from. If you could resend with attachment, I would be very grateful. Thanks in advance, Maureen

Hi Sid, Thanks so much for the information about George Washington Corbin. Can I impose once more and ask if you can check the 1860 Census for him? I know that one of the earlier census just enumerates the heads of households and/or all males and no females. I'm not sure if this is the one or not. The reason I'm looking even further back is to see if George may have been married and lost his first wife. My great grandmother would have been 19 in the 1870 Census having been born in 1851 and George would have been old enough to have been her father but there is no mention of her. I realize she could have been married and gone by that age but I don't have any difinitive proof that he was her father. Also, I have this notation from past research and wonder if you could check and see who this Benjamin Flowers was living with as of this census. Is this the same town and county as George? Flowers, Benjamin State: Indiana Year: 1850 County: Posey Roll: M432_166 Township: Harmony Twp Page: 274 Image: 214 Thanks so much, Maureen
George W. Corbin, age 37, born in Virginia is head of household at family #23 in the 1870 Federal Census of Posey Twp, Clay County, Indiana. Listed in the household were Elizabeth, age 36, born Kentucky, Margaret E., age 12, born Missouri, Martha E., age 10, born Indiana, William T., age 7, born Indiana and Richard P., age 2, born Indiana. George at age 67 born in Virginia (Nov 1832) was enumerated as Washington Corbin in the 1900 Federal Census of District 18, Posey Twp, Clay County, Indiana at DN 26 FN 26. Wife Elizabeth, age 64, born in Kentucky (Oct 1835). George was again enumerated as Washington Corbin, now at age 79, born in West Virginia at DN142 FN 146 in the 1910 Federal Census of District 28, Posey Twp, Clay County, Indiana with wife Elizabeth, age 74, born in Kentucky. In 1910, Elizabeth said she had been married 29 years and had eight children of whom three were still alive. In neither instance were children listed in the household. However, there were families with heads of household Richard P. and William T. Corbin enumerated in the 1910 Federal Census of Posey Twp, Clay County, Indiana. In 1910, Richard (Perry) and wife Kate I. [Cooper]had three daughters in the household. These were Eva, age 19, Blanche, age 15 and Lela, age 12. Note that Richard was enumerated as Perry Corbin in the 1900 Federal Census of Posey Twp, Clay County, Indiana where the birth dates of the daughters were reported as Mar 1891 for Eva, Feb 1895 for Blanche and July 1897 for Lelia (or Lela). Perry reported his birth Nov 1867 and Kate reported her birth May 1871, said she had been married ten years and had three children, all still alive. In 1920, Blanche, age 24, resides in the household of Richard P. and Kate Corbin at DN 130 FN 136 of Posey Twp, Clay county, Indiana where she is a school teacher. Family researchers posting at Rootsweb.com show that Blanche married 1 Dec 1922 Fordyce M. Heaton and was born 19 Feb 1895 died Sep 1971 with death in Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana. I am not related to this family. Best Wishes, Sid

Hi Jennifer, I have no idea if these ladies are in my tree or not. My lead on the Corbin family comes from my great grandmother, Rachael Corbin Flowers. I began with her and found it easier to trace backwards than to go forward as this family must have been born with "itchy feet" as I've found them all over the country. :^) But, if your cousin has a Rachael Corbin, I would love to hear about her. Thanks, Maureen Maureen
Hi Maureen, I saw your post. Was there a Gladys Corbin born in 1906 and a Merne Corbin born in 1910 in your family tree? These two women were married to two of my distant cousins, Charles & Fletcher Stitzle. Fletcher Stitzle's son, Stoney, has a great deal of the family tree researched and may have info on the Corbin's since Merne was his Mother. Let me know if these women are related to you and if you are interested I can send you Stoney's email address. Sincerely, Jennifer Festa
Hi Norma, I just joined this list when I found my g.g. grandfather living in Posey, Clay county. His name was George Corbin, b. 1833 in Virginia-West Virginia. I don't know how long they had lived there as my only access to the census is the one from 1880 on the Family Search Center site. I would appreciate it very much if you could check them out in your book. The other one is a brother named Thomas who is amongst the missing at present. Thanks for any help, Maureen
