Mary, I have a lot of relatives burried in Oak Hill Cemetery. I could have SWORN that was in Clay Co. My grandparents, William B. ROGERS and his wife Edith Pearl WESTFALL ROGERS are burried there. I'm pretty sure my grandmother's parents are there, Luther WESTFALL and Sarah Jenny WEST WESTFALL. Jenny had a baby out of wedlock and caused her parents grave disappointment. In fact, I believe she had that baby with a Lautenschlager (BOY, I did a "soundex" spelling on that one!). Mom said the baby died at birth and is burried there with Sarah Jenny WESTFALL. I have been searching for info on Luther WESTFALL for a couple of years but I haven't visited Oak Hill to see if there is anything there for him. I have his wife Sarah Jenny WEST traced back fairly well, especially on HER mother's side, Nancy GILBERT WEST. I come home for short weekend visits to check on my parents who live in Terre Haute, and I never seem to be able to get to the CCGS or to visit the cememteries. I want to so BAD!! I guess I'll just have to leave my husband. I'll make him stay here (Richmond, KY) and work, and I'll go up to T.H. for a week of cemetery hopping. My whole family, on both my mother's and father's sides, goes way back to the early 1800s in Clay Co. I was born in Vigo Co. I have a lot of information but I'd love to have copies of the paperwork such as deeds, marriage bonds, death certs. and wills, etc. I'm sure much of that can be found at the CCGS. Thank you for all your labor and making this a great list of info. Barbara Marks
I'm not sure who John Long's parents were. But interesting is the fact that Matthew Ralphard COLE son of William COLE and Nancy LUTHER. After Matthew Ralpard COLE married Matilda BASS they moved to Boone Co., IA I'm beginning to think that some of these ancestors followed each other all over the country. Just checked my records, I have Sarah Luther b. 1820 m. John Long (no birth date). And Sarah as the daughter of Joseph Luther who was married to Mary Downs. I have no other Sarah Luther that would match up closely with a date and was married to a John Long. I don't know if this helps or just adds more confusion to all of this. Bev. Some Walmart/Kmart stores, I went to one in Gallatin, Tennessee and they said they couldn't because the photo was done in the studio. They said if I could prove the photographer was out of business not just sold out they would do it. Phyllis and Cheri, Joyce Oehler asked me to tell you, she has a great deal of information on these families. If you want her to copy what she has, you need to contact her for price quotes. I can pass along your letter or you can send it to the library. We would like to have family group sheets ladies, it makes it easier to do your research! Mary
If you can find a print shop that has a color printer, you can get good copies of your photos. I have made many copies this way when I need quick copies of pictures owned by other people. I have a phone book book of Brazil, Clinton, Marshall, Terre Haute, and Clay City issued last fall. No Adkins or Atkins photographer listed. Mary
I have a John Long b abt 1830 who married Sarah Luther. One of yours? I have been meaning to work on this because I think that estimated birth date is off considerably, Teh information I had was that their daughter Laura married Clark C Luther in Boone Co, IA. Sarah Luther was supposedly the daughter of Michael and Mary Nicholson Luther who were in Clay Co by 1830. Sarah was not in her father's hshld in 1850, and my opinion is that the person who estimated these ages probably did it without checking for census records for John Long. Any ideas?
Adkins Studio left Clay City years ago and went to Terre Haute, however, it is no longer in existence. Everyone has passed away!!!! You could have a copy made at any copy place which does photo copying. Quality is usually very good but not always on heavy photo paper. M. Campbell
Walmart and Kmart both have machines that you can make copies of photo's yourself. I have used them many times when the studio has a stamp on the original or when I am visiting relatives that do not want to part with the photo.
I have a picture of my gr.grandmother that was remade at Adkins or Atkins (my Aunt has the picture right now) Photography in Clay City. I didn't find them listed in the yellow pages on the Internet. Could someone please tell me whether or not they are still in business. I want to get more copies made of the picture and no other photographer will touch it with Adkin's stamp on the back. Thank you, Becky Horvath

Much thanks needs to go to the many volunteers at the genealogy societies and county archives. I went on a trip in 1994 and my travels lead me to the the genealogy society and the archives in Clay Co. as my father's family was one of the early settlers there. Henry LONG and his son John Calvin LONG had many children and lived there a long time. Just last week I received a call from a lady in California who got my names from the Clay Co Archives surname list. My names is Phyllis Galloway and I would appreciate it if anyone who reads this and is a member would pass on the message that my area code has changed from 604 to 250. This lady had quit a time finding me. To make a long story short she feels she may have found a Civil War Flag belonging to my Great Grandfather Henry LONG in an estate/garage sale in California. Many thanks to those fine people who were there to help me do all I needed to do and got me to leave my address and phone number besides. Names my phone number will be on are LONG, BARBER, JEFFERS, Thanks again. Phyllis in Clinton, BC Canada
Hi Mary, Thank you, my friend. I did reply to Mr. Harris explaining why no lookups from our "Blanchard History". I would have liked to have answered privately, but since there wasn't a return on the reply I had to use INCLAY. Oh well, he did. Doris Louise
Bill, My Clay County Blanchard History book has been very much used by the family including myself. It is now endanger of falling apart. Nobody touches it. The Clay County Genealogy Library has a reprint as does the Vigo County Public Library and the State Library etc. For your info, I have cemetery records of Lewis Township and have done many lookups. I had the Lewis Township History copied so as to keep the original safe. It was written by the teacher and students of the township in 1918. I inherited it from my Aunt Ollie Neal, who was teaching school at the time. There's much history, family names, some school attendance and even cemetery records of that error. I would be happy to do lookups from this book. There's only one trouble. I start reading the history and forget who I'm looking up. There's no index. So if I want a certain person there's a lot of looking to do. Doris Louise Neal
Phyllis in Clinton, BC Canada Hello, I noticed that one of your surnames for Clay County Indiana was BARBER. I have a Thomas Barber who married Liddy Puckett their daughter was Liddy Jane Barber my G Grandmother. Liddy Jane Barber was born in Howard County in 1854. She moved to Clay County. Would any of your Barber line be connected. In Clay County or Vigo County she married Allen Tiffin. Cheri cestorie@aol.com Arizona From: galloway@wkpowerlink.com Phyllis in Clinton, BC Canada
Mary - go to http://www.cyndislist.com Then from the list scroll to Land Records - once you click on that you can scroll down to what you want to look at. Jan B. in OKC
Hey Folks: We're not here to slam one another - I personally am here to find out more about my family and I appreciate ANY HELP I can get online. I'm a member of the Clay Co. Genealogy Society and personally vouch for how helpful they are not only online but in person. Let's be more carefull of what we say especially since not all of us (especially myself) are not professional genealogists. There are NICE ways of saying things. Happy Hunting - Jan B. in OKC
I too have greatly benefited from the help of others in Clay Co. The people who are working at the Genealogical Society have always been very helpful. Thanks to all who have assisted me over the last couple of years. I greatly appreciate it. Sharon Tharp
Mr. Harrison, You have just offended me! Doris Neal is a fine individual who has helped many people over the years. I want to personally tell you that if you had to type all your messages with your mouth, you might tell others such as you and me, that you are unable to answer this type of research. She is a valued member and of a fine Genealogical Society! She has driven her wheel chair over almost all of the cemeteries in Lewis Township looking for graves of people unknown to her. She has contributed every piece of her own genealogy research to the library, so that others can benefit from what she has done. I am also a volunteer at ccgs. We have no paid employees, only devoted people of many occupations and backgrounds to do this important job. We do everything we can to collect, preserve and store Clay County materials. I do not speak for the genealogy society, but I can tell you, somewhere you got the wrong impession of a lot of people! I thought it was great that you shared your books with people who don't have access to this set of books! I also share! My roots are deep in Clay County and I care very much about the people I have met thru the library. Mary Gardner
Lynn, Sorry. I do know how to spell, but I was angry when I read your comment and I didn't proof read my letter. Doris Neal is such a good lady, who does much good! It was unfair. Mary
