    3. The copies that I have were not actual census forms. So I could not tell which column the F and the M were in. And there is nothing at the top of the page to indicate what these columns were. These pages must have been wrote up by somebody who had a copy of the original census or the film. Thank you. Bev. 3. Thanks Glorianne for the information. It had many of us researchers scratching our heads over this one. No one could come up with the answer. Even one person doing research for the past 19 years and teaches classes on Genealogy. Thanks again. Bev. 2. According to my census history form the space in 1870 right after place of birth is a column reading father foreign. The next column reads mother foriegn. I would assume that instead of putting checks (or in the case of a transcriber - rather than writing it out) F means father foreign and m means the mother is foreign born. terri

    1. John Luther
    2. John Luther, son of Christian, lived in Clay County, Indiana during the 1830s. He was in Izard County, Arkansas, in 1840, and in Ozark County, Missouri, by 1850. His wife's name was Sarah, surname not given. I have found a deed in book A, Clay County, p. 186, dated 5 March 1832. Purnell Chance and Starling his wife of Clay County cell land to John Chance. I note that the only daughter of John and Sarah Luther was named Starling Susanna. Oops, they also had a daughter, Sarah, apparently their first, while Starling was the youngest. They also had a boy named Purnel. Has anyone researched the Chance family? Did they perhaps have a daughter who married John Luther? Or a daughter, Sarah, no one knows what happened to? I haven't looked at the census to get an idea of ages of Various Chance family members, but it sure seems likely to me that Sarah Luther, wife of John, was at least related to this family. In 1831 and 1832, at least, David Chance was agent for sale of clay county lands. On 22 April 1832, David and Polly Chance are selling their own land to John Luther, $150 for South 1/2 of Northeast 1/4 Section 32, Township 12 North, Range 5 West. Witnesses were William Slack and David Trout. If anyone knows of anyone currently researching John Luther, I would like to contact them. I have heard from two different members of that family, but did not know they were connected at the time. That has been so long ago the addresses are no longer good.

    3. On the 1870 Clay County, IN Census for Jackson Township I have run across the letters FM in the far right area after the State of Birth. Does anyone happen to know what this stands for. In some cases it is listed for all members of the family and other times just one member has that annotation. Appreciate your help. Beverly Carman bcpeach@bellatlantic.net

    3. Thank you Glorianne, The citizenship of wives in that era was tied to the husband. When he became a citizen so did she! If an American born woman married a man before his naturalization, she lost her citizenship. My father-in-law's papers show two sons who were born before his naturalization. These sons were both born in Clay County. Mary

    2. In a message dated 99-08-12 20:57:41 EDT, you write: << NA is for Naturalized. There should be a column for the year also. >> As Mary said, NA is for naturalized. There are several columns for citizenship; for example, in the 1900 census: year of immigration (the year he arrived), number of years in US, both columns apply only to foreign-born persons. If a person was born abroad and had taken no steps toward naturalization, "Al" for alien is used. If a person had declared his intention and taken out his "first papers", "Pa" is in the column. If he has become a full citizen by taking out second or final papers, this is indicated by "Na" (naturalized); I also found "Nat" which is probably the same thing. In 1920, the year of naturalization was asked. In one case I found the term "Am cit". I also often found "NR", which is not defined in the census book. This was mostly for women, so just guessing, it could mean "not required". Glorianne
