    1. leftover Luther's and others
    2. This past week, I went through most of the 1870 census for clay County. There are always a few I can identify and this census is no exception. Maybe someone else has puzzled this all out. Page 54 William N. Luther 25 Indiana farming, Cassandra 25. anybody recognize this William N. Luther? Page 55 in the household of George Saulsberry, I see his wife's mother, Lucinda Luther age 45. This Lucinda was shown as a widow in 1850, so who are the two children, Mary E. 15 and Melissa 12, shown after her name so presumably named Luther also? Since her Luther husband was dead by 1850 it would seem someone else's Luther children have been taken in , but who? page 56 in the household of Solomon Ream, Sally Luther age 13. Who is she? Page 57, household Thomas J. Cooprider and wife Rebecca,Jarada Luther 13, I concluded she must be the daughter of Silas Luther. her sister, Rachel C. 11 was in the household of Peter T. Luther. Is this correct? Page 57 John Cole 26, wife Eliza. Who are they? Page 59 household of E W Williams, Martin Luther 17. Who is he? page 67 household of Elijah Church page 69 and wife Cynthia, found Joel D. Luther 16 born Indiana, farm laborer, real-estate $2480, personal property $200.This must be the son of John Jacob Luther who died 1861, and his wife Frankie Church, who died 1855. Are Elijah and Cynthia his grandparents? did he Marry margaret Frock in 1872, and Lucinda Huddleston in 1874? P. 111 and also p. 56, two questions involving Jessups.I wonder if there is an error in what has been handed down through Luther's.On page 56, Miles Jessup is married to Ann E, who was the widow of Jacob Luther. After he died, She Married Miles. Her son Jacob age 11 is in the household. Then on page 111, we find nancy Jessup 67, with Miles Luther 17, Charles Luther 15, and Mary J. Luther 10.They are the children of Jacob Luther and Maria Jessup, completely different Jacob. On the family group sheets I have from years ago, there is also a Jacob born 1858/9 listed in this family. I am wondering if there were really two boys named Jacob born 1859, or if someone just saw the Jessup connection and concluded Ann's son, Jacob belonged in the other family. Any clarification will be welcome on the family. p. 344 Peter T. Luther, 25, wife Mary E. And child Ormina (hard to read) 1. I have his children as James and Minnie, but I wonder if Ormina and Minnie are the same person? If so, the estimated year of Minnie's birth, 1875, needs to be changed. I will appreciate any comments.

    3. Hi Norma... >Dear Sherri, I would be interested in any Ooley's listed I'm not the one who has the book, but I wonder if your Ooleys were ever in Crawford Co., IN? In one of the Crawford County history books, there is an item about a William Briley who was murdered by a man named Ooley (James, I believe) in 1818 in Crawford County, Indiana. I believe that this William Briley may be the father of my ggggrandfather Absalom Briley and his brother James Briley. I have been unable to find any further information on William Briley OR the man who allegedly murdered him. Thanks! Diane

    2. Thanks to everyone who responded to my posting. I had an overwhelming response! I would like to ask everyone who responded to be patient with me as there were almost 50 responses. I will answer EVERY request, but it may take a day or two! As much of my research is focused in areas far from where I live, I can sympathise with those who are not close enough to have access to the materials. This is my way of returning the favor for those who have helped me in the past! Thanks again for your response and patience. Sherri Hoosier723@aol.com

    3. I have found this book to be very helpful, and the date on the one I have seen was 1896. Many public libraries in counties surrounding Clay probably have this resource. I have looked at it at both the Vigo County Public Library in Terre Haute and the Brazil Public Library. I'm sure the Clay County Genealogical library also owns a copy. Laura E. 3. Very interested. The Carpenters of Cloverland included my grandmother, born there in 1876.. You don't mention what years the book covers, but here goes -- Carpenter, Pierce. Davis, Dorsey, Hodges, Webster, Swoyer?, Henderson,Keener or Keever, Garcia, Sourwine. All these married Carpenters or their descendants. They may not all be in Clay county, and others I haven't mentioned, especially from Vigo, may have moved into Clay, but I haven't burdened you with them. Carpenters and Pierces arrived about 1868 from Hyndman, Bedford County, Pennsylvania and Wysox, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. Others I'm not sure of. --- You wrote: Hi List: While cleaning out my genealogy files, I discovered a booklet by The Hoosier Heritage Press, 1971, The Encyclopedic Directory of Clay County, Indiana.
