Hi to everyone, I am fairly new to the list and thus far have just watched and read all querries. I was wondering if there is someone available to do look ups? I am looking for any information on my ggrandfather and ggrandmother, all I know is my grandmother Mabel Marie Girton was b. 21 April 1893 in Clay County daughter of ROBERT GIRTON and MARY ETTA SAYLOR.I don't know if there were more children of this marriage or not. I have just recently started in my search and I have no close family left to ask. There may have been a son of this marriage, ROBERT JR., so far no clue, I just barely remember an Uncle Bob. Any help will be apprecaited or advise as where to go to look will also be appreciated. You can mail me privately if you wish, Thank's Pat pal@comwares.net
Glorianne and List. It didn't occur to me until a few minutes ago, that we stopped at the Zion Church (A lovely brick Church with a park area and cemetery next to it). This was two weeks ago, late Sunday afternoon. There were several people in the basement having a meeting and I asked if that was Mt. Zion and they said NO - then gave me directions to Mt. Zion Cemetery - through the country roads. I'm assuming the Church is named Mt. Zion, as the cemetery is named Mt. Zion. The Church is a white wood structure with a steeple and bell still intact. I apologize, as I had forgotten about stopping at Zion Church. We had been to Olive Hill Cemetery and on to Jordan Village and (then given directions by some very nice folks) to the Zion Cemetery. It's the day after Thanksgiving and I'm over 50 -- so I'll make that my excuse for being so absent minded. Nancee at iggy29@scican.net "All these moments will vanish in time - like tears in rain"

We had a good Thanksgiving Day - hope you all did too.. Is there anyone out there that knows about the history of Mt. Zion Church, County Rd. 750E, l/8 mile south of Hwy. 46. Do you know of anyone who attended the Church and may have information about it and its' membership. The Church is in wonderful condition, so it must have been in use not too long ago. I wonder why there is no name on it?.. Jacob and Delila Price (my ancestors) and some of their family are buried in the cemetery there; I assume they attended Mt. Zion Church, although they lived at Jordan Village. Thank you Heidi Rogers for the cemetery information and listing of the Prices buried there. I have gone to the cemetery and taken pictures of the headstones. It is beautiful and quite well kept -- and a very peaceful setting. I long to know more about the organization of the Church and cemetery!! Thank you much.. Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert at iggy29@scican.net p.s. I am a native Iowan;moved to Colorado in l972; moved to California in l989 (was there for the BIG QUAKE); moved back to Pella, Iowa where I operated a B&B; moved south of Martinsville, IN. 4 years ago and built a log home on 5 acres. So, I'm close enough to run around Clay and Owen Counties! I'm always excited to get acquainted with people in this area!
In a message dated 99-11-26 11:01:42 EST, you write: << Is there anyone out there that knows about the history of Mt. Zion Church, >> My father, Roy Seymour, was one of nine young men who helped saved Zion Church (not Mt. Zion), south of Cory, during the 1920's. As told to me by Dillon Gard, the church was built about 1881. But it is a couple of sections south of SR 46. Is there also a Mt. Zion Church in the county? I have a picture taken 3 Nov 1929 at a Zion Church Sunday School party: in the picture are Adrian Gard, Wayne Gilbert, Gladys Coble, Marjorie McCullough, Tressie Ungder, Massie Unger. Edna Shotmire, Edith Bernhardt, Dillon Gard, and Sylvia Bloomfield. Probably all these people attended Cory school; in a picture of the teachers are: Homer Foulke, Edgar Liston, Clarence Trout, Hope Sweringen, and Grace Congleton. I can scan in these pictures and send them to anyone by e-mail if I am contacted directly (Gfahs@aol.com), not through the list. I am almost sure a history was written by Zion Church a few years ago, but I cannot find a copy in my files. Perhaps the genealogical society has a copy. Glorianne

Are you familiar with any of these people who lived in Monroe, Brown, Owen, Vigo and Clay County, Indiana? My gr grandmother, Nancy Catherine Lawson was born in 1852 in Monroe Co., IN and moved to Greene Co., IN when she married Lewis Newton Michael in 1872. Just after 1900 they came to Clay City where they lived until she died in 1918. Newt died in Terre Haute in 1947. I found a record in Owen Co., IN which shows one of the sisters married to a Fiscus. I don't know which one of the sisters married this man because that record was lost. I have found records which indicate that her brother Gabriel Lawson b 1835 was here in Clay County, IN too, but I think he was moving in and out. Several of his children married in Clay County in the 1880's. I found him in Wayne Co., MO in 1880 and Gabriel was living in Clay City, IN in 1920. He died that year. I think her brother Willis was here too, but there was an older Willis who was one of Andrew Lawson and Martha Jennings descendents also living in Brazil in the 1880's. Gabe's sons Alexander and Lewis C. Lawson were also in Clay County. Cath and Gabe were the children of Amos Lawson and Rebecca Aynes who came to Monroe County from Claiborne Co., TN. Other children of Amos and Rebecca are:Drury Lawson b ca1831, James N. Lawson b 1837, Betsy A. Lawson b 1840, Willis A.Gorman Lawson b 1843, John F. Lawson b ca 1846, Mary Lawson b ca 1848. I believe their first son was William born before 1830. This Lawson family was Melungeons! This has been a confusing family to research, because the Lawson's have all used the same given names, generation after generation. We had always known about the Indian blood in my family. It is only recently that I had heard the term Melungeon applied to us. Mary
I am looking for Jacob Hartley and m Pamela Vaughn in Indiana they had a son Egbert Jacob Hartley who married Mary Elizabeth Haines abt 1894 These are a struggle for me. I can't seem to get anywhere on them. Anyone have any suggestions. Thanks, Hope Farris
Hi List: This is my first post to this List; I am looking for information about Mount Zion Cemetery (as I have Price Ancestors buried there) and History or Records of the Mount Zion Church. Thanks for any help you might be able to send my way. Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert at iggy29@scican.net

Thanks for the information. I was unaware that Zach had property in Vigo. Assuming it is the same Zach. But the chances are that it is. It isn't the most common name. My Isaac lived in Posey township and Zach lived in Jackson township. I believe there is a connection with the Thomas Moore who filed on the property (1838) that Zach willed his children in 1863. Randy, I am looking for any information on deeds in Jackson township between Thomas L. Moore to Zachariah Moore probably dated around 1850. I know that Zachariah's will in 1863 gives the land to his children. I don't know but suspect that the land was later sold as I beleive all the children eventually moved away. I do have a copy of that will.(Thanks to the historical society) I also have some copies of deeds between Isaac Moore in Posey twp and various indivduals including his daughter-in-law. I don't think Isaac's line connects with yours. But Zachariah said he was from Kentucky so there is a possiblity of a connection there. If you would like copies let me know. terri
Do you mean Hardesty's. When we could come up with a dime I would buy my lunch there. Got lunch meat and crackers, an apple or orange and a twinkie. I traded the twinkie to Emil Miller to get to ride his bike during noon hour. We went to Patricksburg this fall for the school reunion. Most of the class of "45" still living was there.
