    1. Clay County Deaths puzzle
    2. Laura Ellen Mitchell
    3. On the Indiana Clay Rootsweb page, once you choose Clay County Genealogy Online, as you scroll down, there is a choice of clicking on Clay County Deaths. When I did so, I found a death for: Cress, Harrison, Oct. 6, 1890 age 6 mos This seems VERY likely to be Harry Criss, born the same year. I then sent off to the Clay County Health Dept. for a death certificate. They can't find him under several suggested spellings - Cress, Criss, etc. He does not appear in the WPA death records for Clay County. Does anyone know where this information on the web page came from? It is very important, in that I think he is the last child of my great-grandfather, John C. Criss, whom he calls "Harry" in a list of his children that was written in 1915. I did not know this child existed until the Civil War records came from the National Archives. After Harry's name it says "dead". Harry was born Apr. 13, 1890. A WPA birth record shows a different mother for him than my great-grandmother, but that could be a mistake like many others in the records. So why can't I find a death record if he appears in this Clay County Deaths list? But then, why doesn't he appear in the WPA records? If I could obtain a death certificate, it might clear up as to who really was his mother - Annie Elizabeth Kendall Newton Asbaugh Criss or Mary Henley. So my first priority is to find out where the website info came from, if anyone can help. Laura E. 2. The Clay County Genealogy Library has the records from several Funeral Homes in their files. This information may have come from those cards. I haven't seen the the Clay County pages, so I don't know who might have posted them. Mary

    1. BIG THANK YOU
    2. Becky, Thank you! It took a great deal of your time to complete the great task of copying the 1900 Clay County Census. I look forward to using Van Buren and Washington Townships when you are finished. I tried to copy it to Index Cards when it first was released so I know what a chore it was and how time consuming. I want to take this opportunity to personally and publicly thank you, for a job well done. Mary Gardner

    2. The reason I asked about the date, was that I was reading the 1910 census today for Harrison Twp., and I found dates for January 6, thru May 7! So why not get started a little early? Mary

    2. I too have to thank whoever put up the 1900 Census. Although I did not think there were any more of my kin still in Clay County in 1900, I decided to look and see. I too was surprised to find my husband's Great Grandfather, Andrew Jackson McNamar, listed with his son James. The real surprise was that all sources I had up til then had his death about 1882 and I had never thought to look for him in 1900 and in a township he had not lived in before. Now I have some more research to do. Pat Dallas.

    3. William.. One time that happen to me...and lo behold...I found out that I was looking at the father instead of the son...we thought that the father stayed in England..to my surprise when the light bulb came on..couldn't wait to call a cousin long distance and she went up there to look at the records..to verifiy it..We were both surprised. She been researching much longer than I had...it just never occured to us that the father came to America (they had the same first names).. 2. Bill Strahle: Are your Strahle family originally from Germany? The reason I asked is when we were stationed there in A'Burg, Germany we had German friends with that last name only they spelled it with an O instead of the A and we were told that before WWII they were known as Von Strohle.
