    1. Re: Risher Mine
    2. Bradley and Bass103, I've written my grandfather to see if there is anything he has on the mine. I believe that I have a photo or to of some mine workers, I'll try to go through my things this week. (I'm a stay home mom with two under two, so I don't always have control over my free time) If I find some photos (or anything) I will gladly scan them and to share. My grandfather is William Thomas McCLAIN son of Lulu(a) RISHER and William Thomas McCLAIN Sr. Lulu's parents are William Randall RISHER and Orietta S. SISSON. William Randall is the son of William Warren RISHER and Jane KYLE. William Warren is the son of John RISHER and Mary HAWK. If any one has any other information on this family, I am interested. Especially the McClains. Heather Mitchell hethmitchell@juno.com

    2. As a native of Greene County, and former Historian of Owen County, with roots all over the area, I can tell many researchers that their English and Welsh ancestors came to the counties of Sullivan, Greene and Clay because of certain and sure employment. Look at old census records and see places of birth. They brought their mining skills with them and helped train others. -- Dixie Richardson

    3. Hello Heather, Thanks for responding to my post concerning the Risher Mine. I think I shall post a Query so that more people can respond regarding the involvement of their ancestors in Clay County mines. What do you know of your ancestor's involvement in the mine? Do any documents exist which show the layout of the mine? Photos of the workers? Payroll registers? My Grandmother's house is across the road and West from the mine. She has explained to me that they used to keep and water the mules just East of her house. The water-filled shaft was still there until the early 1980's, when Brazil Coal & Clay set up their office nearby. Much of the shaft had been filled up with junk that people dumped there. BC&C completely filled the shaft, and all that now remains is a small gob pile just North of the site. My Grandfather, before he died, had hoped that I would get to see the mine uncovered. One wonders what is down there, still. Probably all underwater. About fifteen, or so, years ago. Part of the Saline Road (off of State Road 59) dropped several inches. Likely this was from one of the shafts. That is about all I know about Risher Mine...so far. I appreciate any further help you can provide regard the history of the mine, and the men who worked there. Thanks Again, Brad Crabb ----- Original Message ----- From: <hethmitchell@juno.com> To: <INCLAY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, March 11, 2000 1:55 PM Subject: Re: Great Map News > I believe my family owned the Risher shaft mine. > > Heather > > > ==== INCLAY Mailing List ==== > Help support Rootsweb, become a member at; > http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/how-to-subscribe.html > >

    2. Thank you to whomever brought up the subject of mines. I had no idea that there were mines in Clay County. It has always been a mystery to me how some of my ancestors chose where to move. John and Maria Berrisford Pointon and some other Berrisfords moved from Ipstones, England (where there were mines) to Clay County in about 1867. In about 1873, John and Maria moved to Osage County, Kansas (where I believe there were mines at one time, but I hadn't put this together until now). Eventually John, then a widower, moved to either Colfax County, NM or Huerfano County, CO where there were a great number of mines. It all makes sense now. John must have been a miner and moved where the work was! Thanks again! Valerie Williams

    3. Heads of Families in Clay County, Indiana, 1830 Since there is a lack of information available on early families in Clay County because of the destruction of the courthouse records in 1851, The Genealogy Committee of the Indiana Historical Society feels that it would be helpful to make available the names of families residing in the county at the time of the census was taken in 1830. Clay County was formed by act of February 12,1825,effective April 1 of that year. The area comprising the new county had formerly been a part of Owen,Putnam,Vigo, and Sullivan counties. The names listed below are transcribed from a photostatic copy of the Fifth Cenus of the United States: 1830, which is in the Genealogy Division of the Indiana State Library,Indianapolis.
