Hello, I am researching my Harris family that came from Tuscarawas Co., Ohio and migrated to Owen Co., IN. JACOB S. HARRIS, my great-great-grandfather, was born in Ohio abt. 1838 and died in Owen Co., 11 Mar 1914. He married Margaret BALDER, Margaret was born in Germany. Most of the children listed below were born in Tuscarawas Co. Jacob and Margaret had 12 children. I have a copy of Jacob's will and he states all of the children below except Charles and Andrew Harris. My great-grandfathers obituary, Phillip Harris, states he had a brother Charles that lived in Ohio in 1948. That is how I know of him. These are Jacob and Margaret's children: 1.)Phillip Harris, my great-grandfather, born in Tuscarawas Co., Ohio 28 Feb 1864 and died 29 Dec 1948 in Marion Co., IN, married his wife, Olive (Ollie) SUMMERS in Owen Co., IN. 17 Aug 1890. Phillip and Ollie moved to Clay City, Clay, IN where they had their children. 2.) Jacob J. Harris, married Lucy FRANK in Owen Co., 18 May 1895. 3.) Margaret (Maggie) Harris, born 6 Jul 1878 married Jacob GRAFE, 17 Oct 1914 in Owen Co. 4.) Rose (Rosy) Harris married John KIEFFABER, 22 Oct 1902 in Owen Co. 5.) Julia A. Ada Harris, born 17 May 1887 married Harry B. SUMMERLOT 19 Feb 1907 in Owen Co. 8.) John S. Harris married Sarah O. SPEARS 25 Dec 1901 in Owen Co. 9.) Lizzie (Elizabeth) Harris married Christian M. WILLEN 31 Jan 1893 in Owen Co. 10.) Mary Harris married John KAISER 29 Oct 1899 in Owen Co. 11.) Andrew Harris born in Tuscarawas Co., Ohio 23 Jan 1872, married Caroline FRANK in Owen Co. 12.) Charles Harris, no info. Is anybody researching Harrises in this county? Anybody ever hear of Jacob? Thank you...any information is greatly appreciated! Carla charris@texas.net
For people searching Owen County relatives, especially those who lived near the Clay County line, don't overlook the Owen County DAR's volume of all the legible gravestone inscriptions in the county. If a surname looks German, there is the possibility it is of Swiss Amish/Mennonite origin..there were people with those roots in the area of Owen/Clay border. Contact the Owen County Historical/Genealogical Society at Spencer and the Owen County Public Library, Spencer. This is not to preclude all those German Lutherans in the area also.
>certain and sure employment. Look at old census records and see >places of >birth. They brought their mining skills with them and helped train >others. Yes, in Clay County the principal mining was in Van Buren and Dick Johnson Township. This all passed its most productive time in very early 1900s. That was around Carbon, Perth and Diamond (actually in Parke County). Then best mining jobs went down to North Vigo County but quickly over to Vermillion county, north of Clinton. This was a very big area and lasted until about 1920. Then most productive jobs were with Saxton and Snow Hill Mines north of Terre Haute which were very mechanized.. Of course, history repeated this exact migration when surfaced strip mining came into being in 1930s and it worked the same pattern from northern Clay over to Vermillion. I have relatives who worked both of these cycles, including my father. Bob Zambenini ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! I am looking for information concerning Church Mattox and his family. I am particularly interested in his daughter Mary. Mary is listed as being 14 in the 1850 Vigo Co. IN census. Any information concerning Church or Mary would be greatly appreciated. One unidentifed document I have states that "it has recently been proven that Church Mattox was the son of Valentine Mattox, yet it does not explain how it was proven. Does anyone have any insight on that relationship? Bill
Hi, I'm going to find out if there is someone out there that is researching the Steele family that I am. My great grandfather was Robert Steele. He came from England and his father was Scottish, his mother English, they were coal miners. Robert's wife was from Wales and her name was Sarah Jane Carpenter, mostly she went by Jane. Jane's father was from Wales and her mother from England. They settled in PA and then moved on to Clay Co., IN. Their children were born in PA and IN. Robert was born about 1840-44, he arrived in the U.S. about May the 23rd 1876. We have William born on 3-28-1871 (PA), John born on 9-24-1872 (PA), Joseph born on 3-12-1874 (PA), Elizabeth born on 3-1875 (PA), James born on 2-21-1878(IN), Thomas born on 1-11-1880 (IN), George born on 11-15-1882 (IN), Sarah Martha born on 1-27-1884 (IN), Herman born on 4-25-1886(IN), Robert born on 2-24-1888 (IN), Frank and Archie born on 11-17-1892 (IN). An aunt was with them her name was Anna Steele born on 5-20-1869. A John Carpenter is listed with the Steele family as a neighbor in the 1900 census, he was also listed as a coal miner. John's parents were one from Wales and one from England. He was 23 in 1900 and born in PA. He could be a brother to Sarah Jane Carpenter Steele. I hope this may help someone and maybe myself. There are more, Stories, Karen Thank you for taking time to read this.
